HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-16-1986 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met July 16, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street, Fairhope, Al. Present: Chairman Barney Shull, members Don Smith, Rae Jackson, Al Johnson. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The minutes of the 6/18/86 meeting were approved as written on motion by Don Smith, seconded by Rae Jackson and unanimously carried. I� Barney recognized the people present representing Young Street. They identified themselves as: Sheila Pompeii, Geraldine Page, Ricky Allen and Ronnie Langham. Ms. Pompeii asked if the records for the past 30-40 yrsl of the Recreation Dept were available to look at?(yes); What was the budget year(1001 - 9/30) How we were funded(cig 8 beer tax) When we took over Young Street Center(1955) and did the City receive any funds for Hurricane Frederick for trees. (no); She also asked what were the duties of the City to Young Street(none) that it is actually outside the City Limits. She asked how the members were elected to the Rec. Bd. ( City Council) . We were then asked will the City maintain Young Street and what does the Rec Bd expect from Young Street. Barney explained that all programs are run on a volunteer basis by citizens donating their time, that all the Recreation Board is provide and maintain the facilities plus provide the utilities. That the programs are organized and run by citizens groups. Don Smith told the group that we have tried 5-6 times to get something started like what they are talking about. That we have repaired, repainted and fixed everthing out there but everything has fallen though. That we painted last year, that we will provide paint if they paint. They said that they have another fun day planned for ' August 2 and wanted to know what we would doto help them get ready. ' Ronnie said their was no hot water in the kitchen, they could use dirt on the field and that the lights need repair, also could we weld the basket- ball rims. Phil said he had brought dirt last year when asked and that it sat there until we went back and spread it. Would they meet him and have someone there to help spread it, they said they would. They were ' told there was no hot water in any other facility and that we would not ' expend any more money on repair of lights or rims until we see something solid going on. They asked at what point would we be satisfied that they were getting something going. Don also said he would not object to turning it back over to Chester Hunt and the original group that donated it. ' Al said he would get with Phil and they would go out and see what needed fixing. That soccer would be a good program to start on and he would be gald to get with Ronnie and help him. Ronnie said he would like to start i some programs inside. The Board told them to go ahead with plans and report back at the next meeting. Steve Sims the new high school band director was present to talk with the board about his plans for band camp. He asked if he could use the field 8/II and 8/15 from 6:00.- 9:00 p.m. That he had used a stand before where he came from. Further discussion led to Board telling him they could build stand and he could use Babe Ruth field for camp/practice. He said this would work out well he would get with Phil on stand. Al reported on soccer fields availability of practice areas. Phil reported swimming pool going great. The Board also discussed the air conditioners running all the time at Stimpson and that they should not when fields not in use. Phil said he would talk to Vivian. The bills were approved on motion by Don Smith except FSTC until Oct I and City re-imbursement when money comes available. Motion carried unanimous) Rae Jackson seconded. Al said he would like to use field #4 at Stimpson for 13-14 yr old league next year, that they did not have a field to play on. Don asked why they did not have a field to play on. Further discussion led to them saying they would get with softball group to see what could be worked out. Al apprised board of new plan for going ahead with golf course. That he, Barney and Harry had looked at 190 acres of land at a price of $1326 acre and that they think they can get an option on it and pursue. A lenghty discussion. followed on what hope to do.. Al to talk with them further if we need meeting will call group together. V There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
