at 7:30 p.m. at the Police Station building.
Present: Chairman Barney Shull, members Rae Jackson and Roy Lloyd.
Facilities Director Phil Rutherford and Activities Director
Ed Nelson.
Due to SecreatryRivenbark I s being away on vacation, reading of the
minutes of the last meeting and review of the bills payable will
be delayed to the next meeting.
Barney recognized Barbara Root, Area Y Director; Ron Chambless,
Y Director of Operations; and Bob Street, Eastern Shore Swim
Association. Ms. Root presented the Y's summer schedule at the pa
a general discussion covered the time to be allotted to the Swim
Club. Liability insurance was discussed; City's, Y's, and Swim
Club's umbrella coverage should take care of the different areas
of responsibility. The Swim Club asked if a 6th lane could be
added to the pool. It was explained that this could not be done
since each lane would then be smaller than regulations required.
Other points covered were: City is to maintain pool, Y is to
provide chemicals. Water Supt. Mike Rejczyk is to have water
quality checked each morning. Y is to keep supplies on hand.
Mr. Nelson will provide Ms. Root with list showing City's and Y's
responsibilities. HTH or Gas Chlorine systems were discussed
with possibility of going to newer system in the future.
Mr. Lloyd moved to approve the Y's plan for the Summer Program.
Seconded by Ms. Jackson, motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Chambless mentioned that the Y had contacted Mayor Nix about
the possibility of office space for Ms. Root at the Municipal
Complex. Mayor Nix had advised that no space was available at
the present time but there was a chance space might be available
after the current City Hall renovations are complete. Mayor Nix
further stated this request should come from the Recreation Board
if they were in agreement. Phil and Ed thought space could be
worked out at the pool. The Y maintenance man is to come over nen
and meet with them, look at space and see what can be done.
Barney reported he had not yet finished the Restroom facilities
plans but was almost there, soon now.
Rae reported on 3 plans for summer Arts & Crafts youth activity.
One plan is for arts and crafts to be taught, one day per week
for six weeks, at the Tiki on the beach or at the Middle School.
The Art Resource Team would teach, Board to provide materials at
approximate cost of $200. No charge by the Team as they would
do this as a pilot project in connection with their efforts to
interest young people in art. Phil mentioned Tiki was on a first -
come basis and could not be reserved. Ed said Middle School
cafeteria could be used, according to the Superintendent of School;
if no one is available to move tables out under walkways.
Plan Two was suggested by Faulkner College Director John Borum.
There will be no morning summer classes at the Fairhope Center and
16 computer stations could be used for introductory sessions.
May need to compensate instructors - Names suggested:. Upchurch
and Pacey. Program for 8 to 12-year-olds.
Plan Three is also for the 8 to 12-year-olds, six week program on
Ecology, Conservation and Recreation ("ECO-ED") to be taught by
Janie Stanfield and assisted by volunteers. Approximate cost:$170

and activites would cover plant identification, animals and their
habitats, weather, water ecology, outdoor living, and one session
on night sounds and star study. If program is over -booked, a
second session is possible.
Rae moved that the $500 budget -allocation be used for these
Summer Arts & Crafts programs. Seconded by Roy, motion passed
unanimously.
Roy moved that $600 be used to tie the Dixie Youth Concession
Stand into the City sewer system. Seconded by Rae, motion passed
unanimously.
Eddie reported , May 23rd will be opening day for the ball
games. Monday, May 28th is the Little League Fish Fry and the
Mayor and Council should be given an invitation by the President
of the Little League.
Barney reported he had received a suggestion that the dugouts at
the big baseball field should be reworked and really "dug out"
or lowered. Drainage is to be by french drain. Barney said he
would do any necessary drafting. Labor by volunteers, materials
to be purchased by the Board. No action taken.
Eddie asked if July 17 to July 23 could be assigned for the State
13-year-olds Tournament. Everyone agreed it was OK.
Roy moved to approve the black -topping plan between fields with
County labor as offered; and also to ask the City Council to
approve the expenditure of $3,000 from the Recreation Improvement
Fund to cover materials. Seconded by Rae, motion passed unanimous
