at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue
Fairhope, Alabama
Present: Barney Shull, Chairman; members Don Smith, Roy Lloyd
Rae Jackson, Al Johnson. Activities Director Eddie Nelson
and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford.
The Board approved the minutes of the June 16, 1982 meeting
on motion by Al Johnson, seconded by Roy Lloyd and unanimously
carried.
Barney recognized at this time Bill Trevathan representing the
Dixie Youth Softball group. He asked the Board what the possi-
bility was of getting a press box over the high school field.
That on several occasions recently they had been soaked while
trying to officiate games. Barney related that over the years
there had been a box there and then someone wanted it down .
He asked what they had in mind. That they needed to plan
for next year, that we did not object to having the press box.
That if they would come back with some plans and solicit the
labor, we might be able to furnish material, to come back next
meeting with some plans.
Phil Dyson and Dot Yeager were present representing the Community
Appearance Committee and showed the Board a letter written
last year concerning certain things down at the beach that
were unsightly. After a review of the items listed it was
determined that most ha,d been rectified. Barney suggested to
Phil that he. might consider as a project helping to identify
some of the trees in, the park. Phil said he would, like to
do it, the only thing might be the problem of vandalism..
At this time the proposed restroom facilities at the football
field were discussed . Barney was not aware that there was any
problems with the plans and Phil explained to him the things
that there had, been questions about. It was discussed going
ahead with the bids after the questions had been worked out
and then going before the Council with the Tennis Court,
Press Box and Rest Room bid. to use the money in the Improvement
Account.
Barney opened bids on the resurfacing of the Tennis Courts. They
were as follows:
Melton Const. $3,500.00
Pylate Const. 3,666.00
Mr. Melton being the low bidder to be notified, and we would
let him know as far as when to begin work.
It was discussed getting Ivan Haver to do the work at the press
box. Eddie said he would call him. This brought up discussion
on the painting of the concession stand and bleachers at the
football field. There also followed a discussion on the amount
of money the high school was paying the Rec. Board. Discussion
led to Roy making a motion to raise the amount to $2500.00.
Motion died for lack of a second.
Eddie reported on the softball tournament, the soccer tournament
scheduled,, and that there was some maintenance problems at
the City Pool that could. be worked on and ready for next season.
Roy Lloyd moved to pay the bills, seconded by Don Smith motion
unanimously carried.
Eddie also reported a political rally for Mickey Johnson to
be held July 31, 1982 at the municipal complex at Volanta.
He mentioned the incident with the Youth League and the
tournament scheduling. And the Board stated again that
before any tournament is scheduled, that we should have
in writing what they wish to do.
Phil reported that the boy's concession stand had been broken
into and the damage was about $700.00. The Board discussed
that we have a constant problem with vandalism
and we wish to go on record that if vandals are caught we
want them prosecuted.
There being no further business meeting was duly adjourned.
