HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-19-1982 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met May 19, 1982 at the Police Station at 7:00 p.m. Those present: Chairman Barney Shull, members Rae Jackson Don Smith, Al Johnson, Roy Lloyd. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford, and Activities Director Eddie Nelson The minutes of the May 19, 1982 meeting were approved as written. Mr. Pomeroy came before the Board with a request to give golf lessons, at no expense to the City, at the area out by the municip� pool. He had worked for the Grand Hotel for a number of years and since retired. He felt like he could generate enough interest among the public to offer this service to the community. All thought it would be a good idea. Roy Lloyd moved to allow him the use of the facility, and he would be working individually but with the blessing of the Board, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously. Reverend Jackson came before the Board with a report from Young Street. He remarked that they did not have a May Day, it did not work out. That they were having the girl's softball and exercise classes at the center. That they have purchased an ice cream machine. He further wanted to know what it would take to have someone patrol the area as there had been some harrassment at the field, he wanted to know what it would take to get the field fixed up for use, if we could put up 2 lights outside the building and 2 new doors. He was told that we were going to pull up the posts and get the barbed wire from down there, also remove the stumps. Al moved to buy two doors, and contact the guy for stump removal at Young Street facility, Don Smith seconded and motion carried unanimously. Don Smith moved to pay bills as presented, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously Under old business Al asked if the church understood there was a $50.00 in advance cleanup fee for the use of the stadium. It will be made clear to them before use. Eddie reported he had a letter from the Ethics Commission and that everything was all right, only if Trisha was involved with a direct vote on the Recreation Board would there be a problem. Phil reported that the new field was finished, all they were asking for now was a dugout, bleachers and lights. He also mentioned that Ann Girdler had been calling him to meet her at the pool about changing the lanes, but she had been told that they would not be the right size if changed. Eddie mentioned he had talked with her and told her to get with Henry Helton, and if he thought what she was talking about was feasible to get back with us. Phil said he was going to move the lifeguard stand at Yg. St. to Volanta Poo: Eddie asked if the sagging roof on the batting cage could be fixed Also if the softball clinic could be held this year by Mickey Huds He was told it had been budgeted. Eddie also reported on the runs planned by the Eastern Shore Pacers for June 12th at the stadium and July 17th at the bayfront. Roy said that they should be made to pay a cleanup deposit like everyone else. Getting two no bicycles allowed signsfor Stimpson Field was discus, with Phil to get them. Putting up an outside door for storage of field equipment was discussed, and Al put in the form of a motion spending up to $200.00 to get this installed, Rae seconded and motion carried unanimously. .l ;ed Don Smith moved to accept $25.00 verbal a reement from Charlie Smith for diving board at Young Street, as is, where is. Roy Lloyd seconded and motion carried unanimously. Phil reported that he had some calls inquiring about purchasing the old lights we had taken down from the fields, the Board said that he could get some offers for these. Al asked about the Elementary School tennis courts, who gave the YMCA permission to use them for lessons and when we might be able to resurface them. Eddie said he would get with the Y and straighten the lesson situation out, and Al was further told that there are no funds available now to resurface these courts, we need to build up some capital. Eddie said he had been approached about having a soccer clinic at Stimpson in August. After discussion, he was told that the Babe Ruth field could be used for this if Stimpson was not avail- able at this time. The Board moved to pay Phil Rutherford a $300.00 bonus for the long hours and hard work he has been doing to keep the facilities running smoothly. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned. The bills were considered and on motion by Don Smith were approved for payment, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously. Under old business the Board discussed Stimpson Field progress, the equipment building at the stadium, and the construction of the holding pond at the bottom of the parking lot. Under new business, Barney reported a request from the First Baptist Church for the use of the football stadium September 22-25th. Eddie reported to the Board that a letter had been sent to Melvin Cooper at the Ethics Commission for clarification on his position in relation to Trisha being on the City Council. There being no further business meeting was adjourned.
