April 21, 1982 at 7:00 p.m. at the Police Station
Present: Chairman, Barney Shull, members Rae Jackson
Roy Lloyd, Don Smith. Programs Director Eddie Nelson
and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford
The minutes of the March 17,1982 meeting and the April 1
Special Meeting were approved as written.
At this time Susan Smith was recognized and presented to each
Board member a copy of the Olympic Sports & Performing Arts
Constitution. She stated they had received backing, and now
were starting their money raising campaign. She was requesting
use of the oval area down at the bay on June 5th, to have a
shrimp boil and hopefully a celebrity day with relay events.
She wanted to know the correct way to proceed with this request.
Barney told her to get a request to the secretary and the Board
would in turn present the request to the Council. She thanked
the Board and said she would have it ready by the next meeting
of the Council.
Vann Saltz came forward on behalf of the Eastern Shore Youth
Baseball 13-14 yr. olds. He mentioned that he thought the
Board had given this age group permission to play at Stimpson
Field Monday -Friday on Field 2. He was back tonight to
get clarification.Eddie said at this time Al had asked him
to report an unsafe situation to the Board..the fact that
baseball would be played rather than softball and the foul
ball situation that might occur. All agreed this was a problem
now, and did not think it would be any worse. Vann also mentionE
that they had changed"T. Ball to Peanut League. Barney said
he went out and laid out the new field they requested behind
the Minor, league field, much discussion about changing layout
followed. Vann said he would like to go back and discuss with
his people before a final decision was made on how to proceed.
Don Smith moved to put a Peanut Field as laid out at this
location, to be used by boys or girls, and it would be non --
lighted. Roy Lloyd seconded and motion carried unanimously.
Barney read to the Board a letter of invitation to attend
the Opening Day ceremonies May 1, 1982.
Rev. Jackson came before the Board to discuss the progress
they were making on the Yg. St. Rec. facility. He mentioned
he had some girls teams lined up but he could not get the
boys to participate. He talked about getting bases, the possi-
bility of putting up the old fence that is around the
pool now around the softball field. It was thought that it
might be better to. leave it an open field, as the need
in the future might be different, or this area might be used
for some other activity. All these things to be checked on
and we would work with him in getting the center ready for use.
Henry Helton came forth and told the Board that Patrick Stapletc
would manage the pool for the Y. this year. That they had
worked things out with the swim team(the pool to be ready for
May 1 use.) They would have life-saving courses as demand calls
for. A scuba diving course. At this time Phil mentioned the
request from the swim team to make 6 lanes. Discussion brought
out that it could not be done and have six legal lanes.
Mr. Helton mentioned the fact that they would not be receiving
some $200,000.00 from the United Fund this year and were again
asking for some help from the Recreation Board towards the
operation of the pool. Only to a break even operation. The
Board said they would consider his request.
