HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-17-1982 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board City of Fairhope met Wednesday, March 17, 1982 at 7:00 p.m. at the Police Station. Those present: Barney Shull, Chairman; members Roy Lloyd, Don Smith, Rae Jackson; Activities Director Eddie Nelson and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The minutes were considered and approved as written on motion by Roy Lloyd, seconded by Don Smith and unanimously carried. Barney recognized at this time a Mrs. Dougherty who was here to ask some questions about the use of the tennis courts. She re- marked that she had taken her children there and found the courts tied up and Mr. Threlkeld told her that once play started the courts were tied up for an hour. That the High School was scheduled to practice on two courts from now until April Mon-Thur. until 6:00p.m. and he had private lessons scheduled on one court. This only leaves one court for public use. She thought this schedule did not leave any time for beginners or public play. Barney reemphasized the job Howard did in scheduling the use of the courts and the fact that they were particularly busy this time of year. Don asked about posting a sign that might show what was scheduled to keep these people from having to come to the courts to see. Howard said he did put reserved signs on the courts, and he did post on a board there as well as publish in the newspaper. Mrs. Dougherty thanked the Board for their information and left. Rev. Jackson was also present and passed out a printed proposal on the Young Street park and what he hoped to get started in the way of programs. After reviewing them, Barney remarked that the suggestions were very good and further asked him if he would be available to coordinate the programs at Young Street. He remarked that he would. Phil introduced to the Board Joe Sledge, who was also interested in getting something going there and said he would be glad to work with Rev. Jackson. The Board discussed with Rev. Jackson how to get the problems solved out there. Further discussion led to Roy moving to make Rev. Jackson coordinator at Young St., Don Smith seconded and motion carried unanimously. Roy, Phil and Rev. Jackson to meet at Young Street Friday morning to discuss what needs to be done to get it in shape. Howard asked the Board at this time what, if anything, had been found out on the resurfacing of the tennis courts at the elementary school. Phil reported that with paint, lights and resurfacing it is going to run around $9,000.00. Howard suggested maybe resurfacing now and do the lights later. It was decided that we would hold this over until next month. Howard asked about ordering paint, he was told to go ahead. Under old business, Eddie talked to Henry Helton several times, but the $2,000 they are requesting never came up. He also reported that Mickey Hudson had been hired. That he was not going to teach summer school, and will be hired beginning April 1. The board talked about the building needed to house the equipment we have out at the football field and concluded that Phil was to go out on .bids and poll them by telephone. Roy Lloyd put this in the form of a motion, seconded by Don Smith and unanimously carried. Eddie talked about enlarging the press box. Don brought up that we needed to consider enlarging the ladies rest rooms as it now took about 30 minutes to be able to use them. The Board talked about using Stimpson Field for practice. It was deter- mined that the field was ready, the weather had been good, but this was only a one time thing. That next year the same policy held true. Also if the sprinkler was on that teams were not suppose to practice. That we should be furnished practice schedules. Eddie mentioned that the Girls had a fund raising tournament sched- uled May 31st, did we want to charge them for using the field. The Board indicated they did not. Roy Lloyd moved to give Bryan Rutherford a 25¢ salary increase. That he had been employed over a year, and was doing his duties well. Don Smith seconded and motion carried unanimously. Rae reported that she had talked to the people at the Art Center about the summer program and increasing the classes. They reported that they did not think they had the personnel or room to enlarge the program very much. But they were going to continue as last year. Don brought to the Board's attention that we needed to replace the lights at the Dixie Youth ball field. Discussion led to him making a motion to replace the lights over a two year period, half this year and half next year, Roy Lloyd seconded and motion carried unanimously. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
