HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-20-1982 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met January 20, 1982 at the Fairhope Police Station at 7:00 p.m. Those members present: Barney Shull, Chairman; Don Smith Roy Lloyd, Rae Jackson, Al Johnson, Activities Director Eddie Nelson and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The minutes of the November 18, 1981 meeting were considered and approved as written. The bills were discussed and approved on motion by Don Smith, seconded by Roy Lloyd and unanimously carried. Rev. Jackson came up from the AME Zion Church and discussed with the Board the situation of the Young Street facility. Barney went over with Rev. Jackson the past events at Young Street and events leading up to the decision to discontinue maintenance of the facility. Rev. Jackson commented that he had heard stories but that he wanted to come up and get the Board's comments. That he was interested in the facility and wanted to get it going again. The Board stressed to him the importance of Adult participation and supervision. That they would support any program that they got started when we saw the community doing something to make it work. Rev. Jackson thanked the Board and said he would go back and report what they had talked about. Charlie Smith came before the Board at this time and talked with them about the men's softball program. He mentioned that he had already gotten calls asking about reserving the use of Stimpson Field. He suggested to the Board charging $100 from teams for tournament play. Also delegating to one individual the authority to say whether or not games should be played in bad weather. That there were some problems last year as a result of these two points. There is already a $50.00 charge that is refundable if they clean up the field. After a lengthy discussion on this point, Charlie said he was only bringing this up for thought, that he was leaving it with the Board and left. The Board further discussed this and came up with a motion by Don Smith to charge a $100 fee for tournaments for capital improvement for Stimpson Field only. There was no second. Don withdrew the motion. Al Johnson moved that a fee of $100(with $50.00 for cleanup) be charged for tournament play on any Recreation facility where there is a fee charged for participation in the tournament, and go in capital improvement of that facility. Don Smith seconded and the vote was For the motion, AL, Don, Barneyj Roy Againstj and Rae Abstain; Motion carried. Rae reported that the Adult Rec. group had bought a plaque and placed at the Center. That they offered that maybe in the spring we could replant the planters in the front of the building. She also reported the band was still struggling along, that they might resume practice in the spring and maybe practice at the oval at the pier. The situation of too many keys being out on the football field due to the running group copying them was discussed and how we can get this solved Eddie was to call Mr. Niedemeyer and discuss it with him. Eddie presented to the Board his recommendation for hiring for the summer. hiring two field custodians, one, Barry Patton for 6 mos. and one for 4 mos. Salary to be 400.00 per month. to start Feb/April respectively. Al recommended approval, Roy seconded job description & salaries motion carried unanimously. Roy mentioned that we had 20 live oaks in buckets(if they survived the freeze) to plant at Volanta. He also offered to check on fertilizer at Ibsen's. The Board discussed the possibility of resurfacing and fixing up the tennis courts at St. James. Phil to look into the cost. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
