HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-19-1981 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met at 8:00 p.m. at the Fairhope Police Station on August 19, 1981. Present: Barney Shull, Roy Lloyd, Don Smith, Rae Jackson Al Johnson and Eddie Nelson, programs director The minutes of the July 22, 1981 meeting were approved with corrections noted. Barney recognized John Quinley with the Little League Football Program who came to ask if it was all right for the Little League to use the fields for practice. He was advised it was okey. He was apprised of the fact that we wished to conserve utilities and please work with this as much as possible. Barney recognized Larry Thomas representing the Soccer Assoc. He remarked that the registration would be September 2, 1981, with the first game September 19. That they planned to have a single season ending in December except for the high school that might play through February. He remarked that he needed at least two more fields. It was suggested that possibly they could utilize the new field at Volanta. He said this would be great, and he would get with Eddie to coordinate use. Barney brought up the tabled motion from the last meeting about hiring someone to be responsible for turning on/off lights at the fields. Phil was not present to report, Al suggested getting with the Mayor to see what his thoughts might be about locking lights and having Police Dept. responsible for turning off lights at 11:00 p.m. and report back next meeting. The bills were considered, Roy to check with Riviera on the Young Street bill before payment is made. Roy moved to pay bills, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously. The new building was discussed at Volanta, and what is left to be done. A final inspection should be made with a punch list and Phil to be informed to hold 10% until satisfied all in order. Rae reported that she had talked with Mrs. Lindsey and is to meet with a group wishing to have a memorial made for Mr. Lindsey, and she will report back on that meeting. Rae also reported she had her first band meeting and although response was slow she believed it would get better as summer gets over. She is to have another meeting next Tuesday. Eddie said he will have a report on Cummings Hall by October meeting. Barney mentioned we needed to have a special meeting the first of September to talk about out budget. A date of September 2nd at 7:00 p.m. was set. He also mentioned that he would have the booklets ready by next meeting, and also that as a project for 1982 think about widening the press box at the stadium. He also complimented Roy and Don on the way the field was looking. Also on the stadium, Eddie mentioned painting over the advert ing signs and putting Fairhope Municipal Stadium. All thought this would look good. Roy mentioned that we were going to soon start work on leveling the Babe Ruth field and getting it back in shape in case anyone mentions it. There was no word from the Y on how the swinming program went. The pool closed last week. Eddie reported the swim team ended an a good note. The Board discussed the possibility of getting money from the different associations off the top for concessions. This was voted down. Eddie reported that a group is trying to start a eastern shore jogging association, and are to have a meeting Thursday night, also requesting use of the track. There was no problem with this. Meeting was duly adjourned.
