HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-15-1981 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday April 15, 1981 at the Police Station at 7:00 p.m. Those members present: Barney Shull, Chairman; Roy Lloyd, Don Smith, Rae Jackson, Al Johnson, Programs Director Eddie Nelson and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The Soccer Board members were present to discuss with the Recreation Board menbers their wishes as to what they hope the Recreation Board could furnish for the Soccer Assoc. Barney welcomed the visitors and told them that the meetings were public and they were welcome to attend any of them and we would be glad to work with them. Billy McLean spoke for the members. He remarked that they needed since they were growing as fast as they were'at least one full size grassed lighted field. That Stimpson Field is not suitable for play as it is now. Al addressed the members at this time showing on a drawing where the fields that Billy is requesting could be fitted in the Stimpson Field area. There was some disagreement on this point by the soccer members. It was pointed out again that Stimpson was meant to be a ball field as well as a soccer field, that the Recreation Department provided facilities only and that we felt that we had adequately provided for soccer as well as any other sport in town. That there were practice fields available as per the schools . He asked about the possibility of acquiring at least two more regulation fields with lights Barney told them we would be glad to work with a Soccer representative. Trisha Nelson addressed the Board at this time asking that the Recreation Board consider asking the Colony to put curb and gutter out at Stimpson. A letter is to be written. Don Smith moved that the bills be paid as presented, Roy Lloyd seconded and motion carried unanimously. Barney asked if we had heard anything from Woodie Blanks or Young Street, no one had. It was decided to see what kind of traffic we were having on the telephone at Young Street, to see if it warranted keeping the service. Vann Saltz addressed the members at this time remarking that May 2, 1981 was the opening day for the baseball program at Volanta and invited all to attend. Barney remarked at this time that he was trying to get specifications from Moore Eng. to complete the plans for the girls softball field and if he could do so he would have them ready by Monday. Rae reported to the Board that she was working on an Art program with the ESAA and it looked real good, that the schedule was for Art 5 days a week, at least two hours in the morning, and the cost would only be 10.00 per week. She also reported that she was thinking about holding off on planting at Stimpson Field but Phil told her that watering would not be a problem if she decided to go ahead. Phil reported that we had a problem in that there were teams coming from Mobile that were tying up Stimpson Field. And asked for suggestions as to how best to handle it. Tommie and Eddie are to work together to see what best to do as we had more than enough use with the Fairhope teams using it. Phil asked for the Board's support in penalizing the teams that left lights on at night after practice. The Board voted unanimously on motion by Roy Lloyd seconded by Don Smith for Phil to not allow them to play their next regularly scheduled game, if they did not turn the lights out. Phil reported that he had been requested to ask the Recreatior Board members to consider putting a Press Box at the high school field at Volanta. It was mentioned that this same request had been bounced around once or twice and that we would not put one up again. Roy mentioned that the score- board at the T-ball field needed repairing. Phil mentioned that he would check into it. Phil mentioned at this time he would like the Board to consider purchasing a,liquid fertilizer machine. After discussion it was decided this would definitely be an asset. And asked him to go ahead with the purchase, on motion by Don Smith, seconded by Roy Lloyd and unanimously carried. Eddie reported that the Swim team would have their registra- tion on May 3rd(this so as not to conflict with the May 2nd opening day of softball). That as far as he knew the YMCA is still planning to open on the 23rd of May then all week beginning June 8th. The Board discussed how to charge outside teams coming in to use Stimpson Field for tournaments. After much discussion it was decided to charge $50 per field per day, plus a $50 trash pickup deposit, that would be returned if they clean up the fields. And to leave to Eddie's discretion whether or not the fields were suitable for play after bad weather, This was put in the form of a motion and was unanimously carried. Eddie brought up to the Board at this time, taking over the maintenance of the football stadium and charging the high school for the maintenance and upkeep. He mentioned that he had discussed this with Grady Patrick and Joe Dean and they seemed very appreciative and agreeable to working some- thing out. Eddie had a cost sheet that needed some revision after discussion, but $1800.00 was a figure decided on. This to be a written agreement between the school and the board and to be negotiated every year. Don Smith made motion to negotiate this agreement with the school to take over full maintenance of the field and charge as much as $1500-180( for the first year, and negotiate this figure annually. Roy Lloyd seconded and motion carried unanimously.
