HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-14-1997 Regular MeetingThe Airport Board of the City of Fairhope met Monday, July 14, 1997 at 8:OOAM at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street Present: Chairman Sue Mason; members Bill Payne, Jeanette Puckett, Mike Baugh Secretary, Betty Rivenbark Ms. Mason gave a financial report and asked if anyone had any additions, corrections to the minutes. There were none so they stand approved as written. Sue brought to the board's attention at this time the lease amendment being discussed between Teledyne, our current lessor at the airport, and the City. We had received an amendment that is proposed but at this time it has gone to corporate headquarters. We should be receiving the final document from them. This amendment has already been approved through the City Council for a one year extension of the existing lease. It was decided to send an executed copy of this one just to show our good faith to Bob Jacklin at the office in Mobile. Luther Davis of the Mobile Amateur Retriever Club was present to talk to the board about using the adjoining land at the airport for their field trials to be held October 31 St thru November 2"d. They had sent a letter which Ms. Mason had and she related there had been field trials held in March and the airport board did not hear of plans until a couple of days before the event so she appreciated them contacting us at this time. Sue said she had gone out there in March and related problems she had seen: namely dogs running on the airport runway, people leaning against the fuel farm and smoking, and said she had complaints about all the parking being taken by people attending the trials. Mr. Davis reported where the trials take place and why they had chosen this location. Sue related her discussion with the FAA regarding this event and the city's liability. Even though they had permission from Teledyne that they fire live rounds of ammunition and problems this could be to pilots circling low, that the FAA looked at it as a city problem if anything happened. Bill Payne questioned why could they not leash the dogs, or at least have people stationed along the runway? Mike said in reality what benefit is this to city? Mr. Davis said economically very good to area, Sue said in researching she had found that they had not stayed in Fairhope, Mr. Davis said no, that they were based in Foley as the motel there gave them such a good deal they could not pass it up but he knows they shopped here and ate here. Further discussion led to Mike saying that his initial feeling is unless some consideration given to city, that they can address the issue of safety and perimeter fencing that it might be best just to try and find another location. Mr. Davis agreed with what said, he said he was not aware of all the problems that we had discussed but that he will look into them and get back with us. Bill Payne reported on the Cooper/Mitch hangar project and that he had tried several times to get in touch with Buddy Nugent and talked to him once but that he still did not have a straight answer from them. That they are hangared now at the airport and they are still weighing renting vs. building their own hangar. Sue reported that a letter is supposed to have been sent to Clark again as he is in arrears again. Tom Godfrey was present and was asked if he had anything to offer. He said they delivered their first platinum engine and that this will be a great advertisement for him as the guy is going to a show this coming week. He said he saw that they had started removing the tanks, he asked about the dirt and Sue said that they have a "haz.-mat hauler" that will remove the dirt. At this time Mike reported on his meeting with Bing Miller. Tom said the only thing he could add to what Mike said was he wished that the roof people would come out when it is raining to see major leaks, he was told we would pass that on again. He asked if we knew when sewer would be run to the airport. No one had a definite time. The inoperable VASI lights were discussed, Mr. Norris of Electric Department to be informed. Tom said he had faxed the FAA the papers on the REIL lights. Bill Payne reported on his meeting with Brooks McLeod of Volkert & Associates and how they had found the survey from Barge, Waggoner off a few points. She was told to get with Barge Waggoner and discuss this, but we had heard that probably go with FAA figures rather than fight the system. Bubba Grimsley was present from Cooper/Midge law firm out of Birmingham. He had been sent some information about his firm wishing to place an airplane at our airport. He said they have 2-690 Turbo Commanders, don't know what we can work out, basically looking to have a private space for their airplane. Sue told him that we have 2 corporate hangar slots that were designed for that purpose. He said where based now they have 24 hr. service and that is good, that if they put in hangar want to put in 3,000 Jet A fuel farm above ground that will be self-contained. Further discussion led to Sue telling him to get together further information and present it to us. There being no further business meeting was duly adjourned.
