HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-25-1981 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met on Wednesday March 25, 1981 at the City Administration Building, 387 Fair - hope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama at 7:00 p.m. Those present: Chairman Barney Shull, members Rae Jackson Don Smith, Al Johnson, Programs Director Eddie Nelson and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The Y.M.C.A. had its representative Henry Helton present to discuss the summer program the Y wishes to run at the swimming pool. Mr. Helton mentioned that they had projected that they might sell 80 family passes at a cost to Fairhope residents of $60.00 and out of city residents at $65.00. The gate charge will be $1.00 and they will have rainchecks for the days it might rain. He mentioned that he had talked to the swim team and that they were mutually looking for a coach. He said that he would do everything possible to hire his staff from Fairhope if he can find the qualified people. Last season's experiences were discussed and he mentioned that he had learned a great deal and knew that it would help this season. He mentioned that he would like to open the pool by the 23rd of May, with classes beginning on the 8th of June. possible closing the 15th of August. Depending on the attendance The Board discussed that they thought after last year that it would be good to close on the 4th of July. Barney told Henry that everything seemed to be okey. That he saw no problems with the proposal, and suggested he coordinate things with Eddie Nelson. Barney recognized Woodie Blanks and two other gentlemen who were present to discuss the Young Street facility. Woodie mentioned that they wished to know what they had to do to get the programs going again at Young Street. He was told that the Board had spent all the money they were going to down there, that before he would be put back on the payroll we would have to see results of programs going on. That we would not buy equipment, we would put up some wires to close off the parking area to keep the unwanted people out. The Board offered that they needed to get volunteer help the parent: of the children that signed up for the programs they wished to have. That they would have to be responsible for cleaning up the facility and policing it to see that the equipment is not torn up. That when they had their programs lined up with adult supervision to come back and we would be glad to get things going again. Barney mentioned he was still running two weeks behind on final drawings for the girls softball park but would have them ready by Monday morning. Tommie mentioned that she knew Montgomery would want to review the drawings before going ahead with the bid letting. Al Johnson moved Rae Johnson seconded payment of the bills as presented. Don Smith asked about the financial statements. Since we've stopped using Parker & Fickling we are running behind getting them. The Board recognized Billy McLean, Vann Saltz and Larry Thomas from the Soccer Assoc. Billy acting as spokesman told the Board that the Soccer program has about doubled in a year. That he wished to outline for the Board the problems they have now, and hope we can help them with. He mentioned that he thought because of the growth of the program they needed at least one other field, possibly two. Barney pointed out that that Stimpson Field was meant to be multi -purpose thereby when Soccer season ended, baseball would begin. With a short period inbetween where the field could be refurbished. That we would gladly work with the Soccer Assoc. in any way we can to help. Al mentioned that he did not see that the clay put there for the softball association created any problems. Billy said he could not agree, Billy mentioned that there was no notification prior to closing the field, Al mentioned that he had notified people by phone and they responded that it would not be a problem. Billy asked the Board members to attend the annual meeting that would be held the following evening, Barney, Al Don and Eddie said they would attend. The Board asked that the Directors of the Soccer Assoc. attend the April 15th meet- ing so we could mutually discuss plans. Eddie Nelson outlined for the Board who he wished to hire for the summer and at what salary. The Board saw no problem with what he presented. The fact that we might need to acquire a truck was discussed. We would see how this worked out. Al Johnson moved to accept Eddie's outline as presented. Don Smith seconded and motion carried. Phil reported the work that has been done at Stimpson and Volanta, and the fencing that we need to get repaired. THe Board mentioned that we needed to get another 10 ft. section of temporary fencing. The Board told the secretary to do what was necessary to get two port-o-lets for the girls softball field. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned. To: Fairhope Recreation Board v From: Ed Nelson, Program Director Date: March 2S, 1981 Re: Summer Employment I offer the following as a recommendation for summer, 1981, employment: TITLE OF POSITION : Field Custodians RECOMMENDATION FOR EMPLOYMENT : Don Jennings Scott Langham SALARY : $400.00 per month per employee $800.00 per mo. MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT : April, May, June, July X 4 months TOTAL $3200.00 JOB DESCRIPTION 1 - It is the responsibility of the Field Custodians to perform minor maintenance on all fields used for softball and baseball listed below: A) Greeno Park Minor League field Major League field Babe Ruth field Girls Softball field (upon completion) B) Stimpson Field Four (4) softball fields C) Primary School Girls Softball field 2 - The Field Custodians will receive playing schedules from the Program Director and make sure that playing areas are ready for use for each scheduled playing date. Making playing areas ready includes the following functions: A) dragging the fields B) smoothing and packing baselines, pitcher's area, home plate area, etc. C) "edging" baselines, etc. This includes all areas where grass meets dirt on playing surfaces. Page 2 (cont.) D) picking up or raking up litter when necessary. (Although the leagues that use the fields are responsible for general clean-up, there will be times when the custodians need to put the "finishing touches" on the clean-up effort.) E) performing the minor maintenance functions as requested by the Program Director and/or Facilities Director. 3 - The Field Custodians are responsible for any equipment purchased by the Recreation Board or sponsoring organizations.that they use in the performance of their duties.
