HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-28-1980 Regular MeetingThe City of Fairhope Recreation Department held their regular monthly meeting on May 28, 1980 at 6:00 p.m. Those present: Don Smith, Trisha Nelson, Barney Shull Al Johnson, Rae Jackson and Roy Lloyd, Programs Director The bills were considered and approved on motion by Don Smith, seconded by Trisha Nelson and unanimously carried. Roy Lloyd informed the Board that he had talked with Henry Helton of the Y.M.C.A. He reported on the prices of the telephone, and after discussion the Board voted to go with a pay telephone outside with an extension inside the concession stand at the pool at a cost of 75.00 for the installation and a monthly charge of 19.50. Trisha Nelson moved to authorize this installation, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried. Roy reported that they are still hunting for the leak. They hope to be through before the Y plans to open on June 9, 1980. Barney read a letter from the Baseball Assoc. requesting the use of the Football stadium on Saturday night June 28. 1980 to have a blue grass music festival and closing activities. Al Johnson moved, Trisha Nelson seconded allowing the use of the stadium, and motion carried unanimously. Roy also reported on the Adult Recreation Program at the high school. He told the Board that the response had been very good, and was well received by the public. Woodie Blanks talked to the Board about the Young Street facility. He asked that we get the fence put across the front of the facility as soon as possible as school was out and the children needed some protection from the street. They also discussed the problem of people driving up on the playground and the possibility of putting some poles in to prevent this. They requested the installation of additional security lighting to help alleviate some of the problems they are having. Stimpson Field was discussed. The men are practicing on the North end and we need to put some keep off signs on the South end. The temporary fencing and how it was going to work was discussed. Roy Lloyd reported that the concession stand at Volanta had been broken into. The possibility of getting a guard dog was discussed and Roy is to get a price for one. The possibility of installing time meters on the tennis courts was discussed. It was brought out that it didn't seem right to limit the people at the tennis courts when we are furnishing lights for all the other activities (baseball, football, soccer, etc.) Al Johnson put in the form of a motion denying the installation of these meters, Don Smith seconded and motion carried. Roy brought up that Bubba had a grass -cutting machine and would cut the infield at baseball fields but he wished to have the Board allow him to get a can of gas for the mower. Al moved to allow for this, Don Smith seconded and motion carried. Roy reported that the Youth Baseball Assoc. wished to build an announcers stand at the Babe Ruth field. He asked Barney to design it for them. Barney remarked that he would be glad to. Roy also reported that Don Jennings would be agreeable to having a baseball clinic for two weeks and suggested the Board hire him at a cost of $370.00. Don Smith moved this be done, Trisha Nelson seconded and motion carried. Roy discussed the possibility of obtaining a watering jet to water the fields. He was asked to get a price on one. The tennis courts at the Primary School were discussed and what we could do to get them in better working condition. It was suggested replacing the nets and having Mr. Thelkeld paint new lines on them.
