Avenue.
Those members present: Trisha Nelson, Al Johnson, Don Smith,
Rae Jackson, Chairman Barney Shull
Roy Lloyd, Programs Director and Phil
Rutherford, Facilities Director
The purpose of the meeting being to consider and have explained the proposal
we have received from the Y.M.C.A. to operate the swumiing pool for us this
season.
Mr. Henry Postma. introduced himself and Mr. Henry Helton. Mr. Postma told
the Board of the Y.M.C.A.'s interest in this area, and then let Mr. Helton
explain the proposal.
Each member of the Board had been given a copy of the proposal from the last
meeting, thus having a chance to review it. Mr. Helton pointed out the three
things his proposal bad outlined, those being: the swimming classes, the
day camp activity, and the open swim period. He told the Board that the staff
would be furnished by the "Y" and they would also maintain the chemicals needec
for the pool. He remarked that looking over the monies received from last
year that they might have to raise admission and summer passes to meet ex-
penses. It was pointed out that this amount did not include the teaching
fees as the lifeguards got that money last year.
Trisha Nelson told Mr. Helton that she felt that the staff used at the facility
should be chosen from the Fairhope area if possible. She was assured that
if qualified every effort would be made to obtain people from Fairhope and
the surrounding area. Mr. Helton remarked that the Y offered programs to
better, qualify personnel. And each applicant chosen would have a chance to
take advantage of this training.
Al Johnson asked about the possibility of forming a scuba diving group. Mr.
Helton remarked that with at least six people this could be done.
The possibility of using the football stadium lockers for part of the day
camp activity was discussed, This will be looked into further. Mr. Helton
explained that the children brought their lunch, bathing suit and towel. That
the program ran from about 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. with arts & crafts, field
activities and swimming.
Mr, Postma brought out that it was best for everyone if we worked together
and it was certainly the "Y's" intention to do so. He told the board that
the "Y" had some 13 acres of land that had been donated to them at the edge
of town. That they were very much interested in having a permanent location
in Fairhope. Maybe in the future something could be worked out to benefit
both' ithe City and the Y.
All questions answered satisfactorily to both parties, Don Smith moved that
we accept the Y.M.C.A.'s proposal to use the City swimming pool for the summer
of 1980. Al Johnson seconded and motion carried unanimously.
George Roberds came before the Board with some drawings he had made of the
Volanta Park concession stand. He was seeking comments from the Board. Most
agreed that they did not wnat to build back a building anything smaller than
what they had before. George went over what the Health Department is requiring
After much discussion he took the drawings back and will redraw them adding
four feet on each side. He is to get with Phil Rutherford who will coordinate
the bid proposals.
Don Smith made a motion to allow the secretary to order a new supply of cigaret
stamps, Al Johnson seconded and motion carried unanitmusly.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
