HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-20-1980 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope, Alabama met for their monthly meeting on Wednesday, the 20th of February 1980 at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue. Those members present: Chairman Barney Shull, Trisha Nelson Rae Jackson and Al Johnson, and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford The minutes were read and approved as written. The bills for the month were considered, and approved unanimously for payment except the bill from FSTC for the second half of 1980 on Stir.pson F held over until the March meeting, in hopes we might have an answer to our request to make it rent free. Motion was by Trisha Nelson, seconded by Rae Jackson. At this time the Chairman recognized Lyle Underwood, the new principal at Fairhope Middle School. Mr. Underwood mentioned that the school is having projects to raise money. That he would like to take the money and fix basketball courts at the school thereby creating some form of physical education facility and helping to raise school spirit. He is seeking help from the City thru the Recreation Board on leveling the courts and filling it with clay. Phil Rutherford remarked he would look at the area and get with Trisha Nelson and ultimately seek Council approval on the project. Rae Jackson moved, Trisha Nelson seconded having Trisha take this to the Council, motion carried unanimously. Jerry Anderson came before the Board to discuss the softball association being able to use St mpson Field this season. He asked about the progress of the work and if we had a definite answer to give him, so he could pass the information on, about when the field would be ready for use. He was asked when the season began and he told them the middle of May. It was talked about getting one side ready for use(two fields) by the time the Softball Assoc. needed it and then posting signs to keep people off the other two fields until all the work was complete. Rae Jackson moved that we try to have the North fields ready for use by the middle of May and not use the South fields until the fall season. Randy Jones came before the Board to talk about setting up a place on the beach for the rental of sailboats. He said he would bring in a trailer with the boats and rent from the trailer during the daytime. He said he would start off with five boats and probably rent from May to September. He was asked to get his proposal on paper and then bring everything to the Board next month and they would make some recom- mendation to the City Council. The Stisnpson Field project was discussed. And a discussion led to the remark being made that we needed to get three contractors to make bids on the concession stand drawings. Phil Rutherford is to coordinate getting the bids. The phone at the pool was brought up, and it was decided to carry it over since Roy Lloyd was not here to report if he was able to get any help with it. Phil Rutherford brought to the attention of the Board that Ernest Pickett was due a raise, and he was recommending the Board grant him one. Al Johnson moved and Rae Jackson seconded raising his salary to $3.25 an hour. Phil reported that we had ordered two swings for the parks that the Hurricane had blown down. That Mr. Cooper was almost finished with the work at the Volanta Park. Trisha Nelson moved that we go out on bids for the Concession stand at Volanta Park, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried. There being no further business meeting was duly adjourned.
