HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-09-1980 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met on January 9, 1980 at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, at 7:00 p.m. Present: Chairman Barney Shull, Members Trisha Nelson Doti Smith, Al Johnson, Programs Director Roy Lloyd, and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford. The minutes of the acember 12, 1979 meeting were read and approved as written. The bills were considered and a question arose as to why Howard Threlkeld had some work done without coming before the Board and making a request. Barney Shull remarked that he had talked with Howard over the phone and okeyed the work but he did not know that Howard had not talked with any other Board members. Trisha Nelson moved and Don Smith seconded sending a letter to Mr. Threlkeld asking him to come before the Board with such a request unless it is an emergency,which it was not this time. The motion carried unanimously. The rest of the bills were approved for payment on motion, also including a normal amount for Parker & White and Riviera Utilities, which had not been received before the meeting. Mr. Felix Bigby carve before the Board at this time and presented a plague from the Youth Football Assoc. for 1979 to the Recreation Board for the use of the facilities. Barney Shull and all the Board members expressed their appreciation for this plague. Mr. Bigby asked if there was some place we might could store the football uniforms possibly at the tennis court office. He was told he could but in the past they had stored them at the Health Office/Civic Center on Morphy Avenue. He remarked that this would be fine. He is going to co-ordinate with Phil Rutherford getting them moved there. Under old business the Stimpson Field project was discussed. Roy reported that he had talked with Dr. Self about the grass and he had recommended waiting until April to plant or we would probably lose half of it. Also we needed to take soil samples and have them analyzed at the Auburn substation so we would know what type of fertilizer to use. Phil reported that he did not know where we were going to get the topsoil. Trisha Nelson and Al Johnson said they had been in touch with some members of the Soccer Assoc. who said they thought they could get a special price on topsoil working with Clay City Products. Don Smith put in the form of a motion authorizing up to $2500.00 for topsoil if we could get it at a discount as we were led to believe. Al Johnson seconded and motion carried unanimously. Aaron Norris remarked that they had been working out there and how things were progressing. He also brought up the possibility of whether or not the Board wished to move the fence back in to allow for more parking. After discussion, it was decided that this would be a good idea and the Board was in favor of it. It was also brought out that J.W. Creamer on Young Street had volunteered some property for parking. A letter will be written to confirm his offer. Aaron talked about the new lights he iras placing at the Volanta Park and the ones he was replacing from the hurricane. The replacement of the score- board at Volanta was discussed, and the concession stand being rebuilt. It was brought out that we would have to bury new bases this year, as the ones we used last year had about all the wear they could stand. Barney passed out prints on the concession stand and everyone discussed the materials, cost, etc. at great length. Trisha Nelson brought up the possibility of changing the Recreation Board meeting night to the third Wednesday in the month. She had talked with Kenny Hanak of Parker & White and he assured her that we could have our monthly report from them by that time. After discussion Trisha moved to make this change to the 3rd Wednesday, Don Smith seconded, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, mention carried unanimously. The secretary to notify the press of this change.and also send a letter to Kenny Hanak of Parker & White. Roy Lloyd said he was still working on getting Cummings Hall to use for basketball. Phil R. reported that he was to meet with Gordon Bailey on 1/10/80 to look at the swinming pool and get him to report on what problems we have out there. It was brought out that we needed to check the football stadium to see what needs to be done out there before football season starts. Trisha Nelson said she had talked with Jerry Boyington about the rent iie are paying at Stimpson Field. It eras decided that we should send a letter requesting how much tax we are paying and so moved, Al Johnson seconded and motion carried unanimously. Al Johnson asked that we help the Soccer Assoc. by moving the goals and getting the fields ready for the Spring season. Phil R. said he would get the grass cut. It was discussed each member taking on one of the recreation facilities so the following was decided: Trisha Nelson Greeno Park Swimming Pool & Tennis Courts Don Smith Stadium and Baseball Fields Al Johnson Stimpson Field and Soccer Assoc. Al Johnson -Roy Lloyd Young Street Facility Rae Jackson Jasmine, Elem. School, Fels St and Knoll Park Beach Facilities Barney Shull Each to be responsible for the facilities and keeping up with activities.
