HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-08-1979 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met on Wednesday, August 8, 1979 at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue with Chairman Barney Shull presiding. Those present: Don Smith, Ed Nelson, Trisha Nelson Al Johnson and Roy Lloyd, Programs Director and Phil Rutherford The minutes of the July 25th meeting were read and duly approved. The bills were discussed and approved for payment, with the note that the girls softball season is coming to a close so we can have the Port-O-Lets picked up, and the telephones at the Volanta Park and swimming pool can be disconnected. The motion for approving the bills was made by Al Johnson, seconded by Don Smith. In a review of the special meeting that was held by the Recreation Board and concerned parents from Young Street, it is noted in the minutes that Al Johnson made a motion to authorize Roy Lloyd to spend up to $100.00 for softball equipment for the Young Street facility. Don Smith seconded this motion and it carried unanimously. Ed Nelson brought to the attention of the Board that we needed a full time employee to cut grass and maintain the parks. He so moved that Phil Ruther- ford have authorization to find a person and hire him for $3.00 per hour. Al Johnson seconded and it was unanimously carried. There was a lengthy discussion as to whose responsibility it was to cut the grass at the stadium inside the fence, the City or the school. Barney said he was sine that the school should be keeping this up, but Al pointed out that it -,-ms not spelled out in the written agreement. Along this line Ed Nelson brought up that the school had calls about providing parking for handicapped at the stadiums. Phil R. said he was sure this could be worked out without any problem. Ise would try to secure at least five spaces right at stadium entrance. Also a motion was made by Al Johnson seconded by Ed Nelson authorizing Phil R. to bury paint and paint the handrails at the stadium . Roy Lloyd reported that he had been in contact with Marie Lipscomb about the landscaping of the slope that we were hoping to accomplish at the stadium. Mrs. Lipscomb said she was sure the garden clubs would donate and plant the bushes, but we needed to provide someone to keep them watered. The Young Street representatives were asked what programs they had started since the last meeting. They replied they were holding dances on the weekends as well as girls basketball and softball had been started. They said they wished to employ Woodie Blanks to keep up the facility. Henry FLa.seb was not present with the list of recommendations that the Recreation Board had asked for so any action could not be taken at this time. The representatives were asked to get this information to the Board so they could study it and take some action at the September meeting. Barney S. presented to Phil R. a layout on the field at Stimpson Field. He stated he would have the concession stand plans ready by next Monday so we can go out on bids on same. Al Johnson asked where we were in this project. Phil R. reported that we were going to put water and sewer in starting the 9th, we were ready to put the backstops in and the other necessary fencing, we would then disc it again and plant grass seed. Roy Lloyd stated that the pool was having problems, that it had been closed for two days because the necessary chemicals were not available to kill the algae. Al Johnson told him that he could use HCH and it would kill the algae. He reported that they had put chlorine in it today honing to alleviate the problem we would wait and see what we could do with it tomorrow. He also reported that the pool was beginning to crack all around the edges. Phil told Barney that he was sure there was a leak in the filtering system. It was decided that as soon as the pool closes for the summer we ask Gordon Bailey to come over and see what was wrong and what could be done. The Board members were asked to consider who they might wish to nominate for the Recreation Board position soon to be open. There being no further business, meeting was duly,,. -a journed.
