HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-13-1979 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met for their
regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 13, 1979 at the
City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue at 7:30 p.m.
with Chairman Barney Shull presiding.
Members present: Don Smith, Ed Nelson
Programs Director Roy Lloyd, and Phil Rutherford,
City Supt.
The bills were discussed with a request for the salaries
of the summer employees being included in the next month's
list of bills. On motion by Ed Nelson, seconded by Don
Smith, they were approved as presented with the exception
of the bill from the Coca-Cola company which was billed
in error.
The running of the swimming pool was discussed. Roy Lloyd
reported how things were going, the attendance and money
we have received so far. Barney Shull reminded him to be
sure and keep accurate and complete records for the auditor
as this has been pointed out as something we have been found
lacking in before. Roy Lloyd commended the personnel in the
Water department for the way they were maintaining the pool
and remarked that several comments had also been made by the
public on how nice things were being maintained. It was
decided to send a letter to the Water & Sewer Department
commending those who had worked so hard on the upkeep of the
pool. with a copy going to the Council.
Barney Shull brought to the attention of the Board that
Ms. Anna Wood volunteered to co-ordinate an Arts & Crafts
program at the Young Street facility. In order for her
to do this she would need the Recreation Board's authoriza-
tion and financing for the materials. After lengthy discussio
Don Smith recommended $300.00 for this program, Ed Nelson
seconded, and it was unanimously voted.
It was discussed having representatives of all associations
present at the July 11, 1979 meeting with all being in favor
of this. Roy Lloyd said he would be sure they are contacted.
Henry Haseb was present as a representative from the Young
Street facility. Don Smith told Henry how disappointed the
Board was in the actions of the young people at Young Street
in that they had torn up,within one week after the facility
was completed, the basketball goals which the City had
installed. That even after the Board had tried to meet with
several people about the facility, no one showed up, and
that it was the unanimous opinion of the Board that there
was not going to be any more money spent at Young Street until
the people themselves did some word: and showed an interest
in the facility. This was expressed to him by each Board
member. They again asked if Henry could get some people to-
gether for a meeting. They told him they would be more than
glad to work with them but we were not going to continue to
put money cTown there and have the facilities torn up every
time we get them fixed. Henry said he would try to get togeth
several people so they could work something out. He remarked
that he did not know the solution and was open to the sugges-
tions of the Board on how to stop the vandalism. He was to
get back with the Board after he tried to get some people to-
gether.
Roy Lloyd brouglt up that he and Don Smith had been out to the
stadium and this led to discussion as to condition, the con-
tract that had been drawn up(not specific enough, needs to
be reworked), getting it ready for the next football season,
and also trying to budget next year for landscaping.

Roy Lloyd reported that he had talked to the Coca-Cola
company and they thought the Recreation Board ought to
install at the tennis courts a coke machine, that it
would be a good way to earn money. Also he stated that
on Stimpson Field we were going to use all vending machines
in lieu of having persons employed at the concession stand.
The Board agreed that this seemed a good idea.
The progress of Stimpson Field was discussed, with Phil
Rutherford reporting that the fencing was now going on.
Phil Rutherford reported to the Board that Joe Dean had
borrowed from the City a push lawn mower and brought it
back broken. The Board authorized the purchase of a new
mower on motion by Ed Nelson, seconded by Don Smith and
unanimously carried, to replace the one that belonged to
the City. Mr. Lloyd was to talk to Mr. Dean about the
continuous repair that was having to be done to the lawn-
mowers and his responsibility for same.
Roy Lloyd also reported that the baseball season for the
Dixie Youth was about to wind up, that they had an excellent
season with few problems. He told of their request to use
the stadium for a blue grass music concert as a fund raising
event for the association. The girls baseball season is
in full swing and will last until August.
There being no further business to discuss, meeting was
duly adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
etty RiPenbark, Secretary
