monthly meeting May 9, 1979 at the City Administration Building
387 Fairhope Avenue at 7:30 p.m.

Don Smith, Don Wiggins, Roy Lloyd, programs director
and Phil Rutherford, City Supt.
The minutes of the April 11, 1979 meeting were approved unanimously.
The bills were discussed and on motion by Ed Nelson, seconded by Alton
Johnson were unanimously approved for payment.
The progress of Stimpson Field was discussed, with Barney Shull report-
ing that he had it staked out. Alton Johnson remarked that he had
informed the Soccer Association that they would not be able to use
the field for their September season. He was reassured that there
would be a field available for use at that time.
Roy Lloyd reported on the opening day of thec3 ball Association,
held May 5, 1979. Phil Rutherford discussed the trash that was
being left out there after games and that it was the responsibility
of the teams using the field to be sure the parks are clean when
they leave. It was decided that a letter should be sent stating
clearly that this trash must be picked up after games.
The opening of the City pool was discussed with a notice to be published
in the newspaper stating date, time, cost, and swinming lesson informa-
tion. The use of the pool by the exceptional children was discussed,
with a motion being made by Ed Nelson that they can use it as long as
they follow the guidelines set out(having City employee present, qualified
life guards present, and general pool rules). Don Smith seconded and it
was unanimously carried. The possibility of setting up the concession
stand indoors was discussed in order to prevent vandalism. Phil Ruther-
ford reported that he thought it could be done as suggested.
The condition of the Young Street facility was discussed. It was noted
that the basketball goals that had recently been put down there were
torn up, that the restrooms were filthy and torn up, that in general
the whole condition was deplorable and despite all attempts to make
this a nice facility for the black people it seemed that they were deter-
mined to keep it unuseable. A letter is to be written to Kevin Gray,
asking him to get together a few interested people to discuss the facility
and what could be done about at a meeting with Roy Lloyd and Recreation
Board members. Don Smith moved to hold up all funds going to Young Street
until this meeting could be held, Alton Johnson seconded and it was unan-
irnously carried.
The Lions District High School All Star Players will be having their
playoff game May 19th.
There being no further business to discuss, meeting was duly adjourned.
