I.Unutes for meeting January 11, 1978
The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session on
Wednesday, January 11, 1978, at 7:30 p.m., at the City Administration
Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama. Chairman Barney L.
Shull was not present. Board Members present were Mr. Ed Nelson,
Mrs. Jean N. Smith, and Mr. Don Wiggins. Facilities Director Phil
Rutherford and Acting Programs Director Joe Dean were also present.
Board Member Stephanie Montgomery was not present.
The minutes of the December 14th, 1977 meeting were read and
approved as recorded.
Board Member Don Wiggins asked Facilities Director Phil Rutherford
if the lights at the tennis courts had been set to go off at 10:00 p.m.
during :the [winter months. Phil said that he would take care of it.
Board Member Jean N. Smith asked about the grading of the infield
at the Babe Ruth Field. She said this would have to be done by the
end of January for the coming baseball season. Facilities Director Phil
Rutherford said. that he would get the City road -grader and take care of
this.
Board Member Ed Nelson brought up concerning the dug -outs at the
Field, that the roofing needed to be fixed and that the dug -outs should be
extended. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford said that the fencing
around the dug -outs also needed to be replaced. Board Member Don Wiggins
asked about how much it would cost to repair these dug -outs. Phil
Rutherford said it would cost about $300.00 per dug -out.
Board Member Ed Nelson read some bids for a new Batting -Tunnel.
They were as follows: $3,100.00, $2,600.00, and $2,167.00. There was
much discussion on building a Tunnel for around $800.00.
Board Member Jean N. Smith moved, seconded by Ed Nelson to have
the old building behind home plate at the Babe Ruth Park removed as
it was of no use.
Board Member Don Wiggins brought up that the Mayor had the drawing
of the old building next door to the old Adult Recreation Center and said
that they were trying to get Federal Funds to break up, lower the ceiling,
and make better entrance ramps for wheelchairs and such.for this building.
Board Member Jean N. Smith brought up that Chairman Shull and herself
had met with the City Auditors and that there would have to be some changes
on the Recreation Board for the coming year.
Acting Programs Director Joe Dean said that he wanted a job description
of what he was suppose to do.as Programs Director. There was much discussion
on the different job description's for the Sumer Program, Joe Dean suggested
'starting a swimming team at the Pool during the Summer.Program.
Board Member Don TRiggins read over the recommendations made by the
City Auditors for the Recreation Board for the coming year.
There being no further business to come before the Board the meeting
adjourned at 9 : 00 p.m.
