HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-14-1977 Regular MeetingFAIRHOPE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD Minutes for meeting December 14, 1977 The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session on Wednesday, December 14, 1977, at 7:30 p.m., at the City Administration Buulding, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama, with Chairman Barnev L. Shull presiding. Board Members present were Mr. Don Wiggins, Mrs. Jean N. Smith, and Mr. Eddie Nelson. Board Member Stephanie Montgomery was not present. (C=ti'.es.tr.,pr:esenti was, Director of the Young Street Art Program ?'ors. Jean Sni,th-. 1 11 . The Board approved the minutes of'the November 30, 1977 meeting with the following corrections: 1. In reference to Board Member Ed Nelson saying that the City could use the track at the School, he said the School did not have anything aganist the City people using the track at the Stadium. 2. In reference to Tommy Springer saying that it cost 51.56 per bo;T during a fourteen week period for football, this should be corrected to sav that it cost $1.56 per boy per week. y Board Member Jean N. Smith moved, seconded by Ed Nelson to pay the Young Street Art Program the $51.69 deficit. Motioned carried. Director of the Young Street Art Program.Mrs. Jean Smith was present to inquire about the recommendations made on the new budget for the Program. She asked the Board if they had approved a Playground Supervisor for the Young Street Art Program. She expressed that there was an urgent need for a Supervisor since there were so :-nanv kids. She also said that they could use help from the community people and those interested in the Program as money is needed for different expenses. Chairman Barney Shull thanked Mrs. Jean Smith for her work and concern for the Young Street Art Program. Board Member Don Wiggins brought up from the Auditors that the City Recreation went over their budget for 1977. He also said that the Council wanted to have a meeting with the Recre-tibn.-_Board concerning this matter.. Chairman Shull said that he would take care of the plans for the new kitchen at the Adult Tourist Center as soon as Dossibl( Chairman Shull said that he checked on the cost for meters for the tennis courts. He said that the meters would cost from $35.00 to $40.00. The overall cost for the meter boxes and installation would run about $480.00 for each tennis court locatiol There was much discussion on the tennis courts and also install- ing meters at the hand -ball courts. Chairman Shull handed out diagrams to the Board members showing the tennis courts and where meters could be installed. There was also discussion on a diagram showing how Stimpson Field could be made into a Soccer -Softball Complex. A concession stand would be located in the center of the Complex. The concession stand could be operated by the Citv Recreation. There was discussion on hiring an elderly couple or someone full time to operate the stand, Chairman Shull said that the budget cost for the lay -out of this program would have to be presented before the Council for approval. Fairhope Park and Recreation Page 2 Minutes for meeting December 14, 1977 Board Member Don Wiggins brought up for Councilman Tack Stipes that the lights on the tennis courts be turned off at 10:00 P.M. instead of 11:00 D.m.,during the Winter months. Board Member Ed Nelson moved, seconded by Jean N. Smith to have the lights turned off at 10:00 p.m. during the months of January and February. Motion carried. Board Member Ed Nelson brouht up that the total amount of parking money taken in was over 92500.00. Board Member Ed Nelson asked the Board where the money for parking at the beach was going. The Board said that this money was going into a separate account called Beach Revenue. In new Business, Chairman Shull inquired about the improvemen s on the Babe Ruth Baseball Field. Board Member Ed Nelson went over the improvement suggestions concerning this. Chairman Shull asked the Board if there had been any discussion concerning a Programs Director. Board Member Ed Nelson told Mr. Shull that at last meeting there was discussion on hiring someone full time as a Programs Director, Mr. Shull su-Sgested hiring someone in the Fairhope area or someone familiar with the community. There was much discussion on hiring someone but no motion was made.
