Minutes for meeting June 15, 1977
The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular sessioi
on Wednesday, June 15, 1977, at 7:30 p.m. at the City Administrat,
Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama, with Chairman
Barney L. Shull presiding.
The following members were present: Mrs. Jean Smith and
Mr. Don Wiggins. Board members not present were Mr. Eddie
Nelson and Mrs. Stephanie Montgomery.
Also present were Facilities Director Phil Rutherford and
Acting Programs Director Joe Dean.
Guest present: President of Youth Activities Tommy Springer
and Young Street Director's Al Bosby and Leslie Perdue.
The minutes of the May 11, 1977 meeting were read and
approved as recorded with the exception that Acting Programs
Director Joe Dean would be paid $400.00 monthly for three
months during the summer.
Don Wiggins moved, seconded by Jean Smith to pay the bills
for the month.
It was approved by the Board that the bill from Swimming
Pool Contractors for repair of the Greeno pool (totaling $1765.00
and painting of the pool (totaling $800.00) would be paid and
that the other bill from Swimming Pool Contractors for purchases
for Greeno pool would be held for payment until the next
Recreation Board meeting.
Acting Programs Director Joe Dean gave his report on the
Greeno swimming pool. A total of $1,550.65 has been taken in
for fees and tickets. Joe Dean stated that Lifeguard April
Mullins was giving swimming lessons and to be paid $50.00. All
the lifeguards at Greeno pool had their Senior Life -Saving
Certificates.
Chairman Barney Shull said that an official representative
of the City would have to be present at the Greeno pool in order
for the Y.M.C.A. to use the pool. He also said that they would
have to pay someone. At the present time, the Y.M.C.A. was
considering using a pool donated to them for use in Daphne.
It was also brought up that the diving boards at Greeno pool
needed repairing. Acting Programs Director Joe Dean stated
that Mr. Gene Graham from Swimming Pool Contractors would sell
us two boards at a total of $650.00. The Board decided that
Joe Dean call and get some bids for two new diving boards.
Facilities Director Phil Rutherford gave a report on the
facilities. He said that the lights.had been cut off at the
fields because of the trash.
Board Member Jean Smith inquired about whether or not a
letter was sent to each organization concerning maintenance of
the fields. It was not sent as the letter was not made up.
Facilities Director Phil Rutherford said that anyone given
permission to use the fields should be responsible for cleaning
them up afterwards.

Board Member Jean Smith gave a report on the Young Stree.t
Art Program. She said that Director of the Young Street Art
Program Jean Smith wanted to express her thanks to Facilities
Director Phil Rutherford for everything he had done. There is
a total of 160 kids under the Art Program.
Board Member Jean Smith also brought up that a Summer
Luncheon Program wants permission from the Board to serve lunches
at no cost for three days a week to the kids at the Young Street
Art Program. There would be volunteers to deliver the lunches
at Young Street.
The Board approved the Summer Luncheon Program for the
Young Street Art Program.
It was also brought up that the kids at Young Street were
getting their feet cut up by glass and that a sweeper was needed
to sweep the trash. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford said tha
the City's sweeper was torn -up at the present.
President of Youth Activities Tommy Springer said that
everything was going fine in the Baseball Programs. He said
that they would need a couple of portable toilets during the
Dixie Youth Tournament.
Chairman Barney Shull said that the Tournament would run
July 31st through August 6th. Mr. Shull said that Joel Wilson
would have to be told when to do the lining on the fields.
Chairman Barney Shull brought up before the Recreation
Board that we purchase a full• page ad for the City of Fairhope
at $100.00 to appear in the Dixie Youth Tournament Program
Booklet.
Board Member Jean Smith moved, seconded by Don Wiggins
to purchase the ad for the City of Fairhope at $100.00.
The Recreation Board approved the Eddie Stanky Youth Camp
to be held in Fairhope during the latter part of July. This
is a baseball camp -training for kids up to sixteen years -of age.
Board Member Don Wiggins said that everything at the beach
was going well.
Chairman Barney Shull brought up that planning of the Fall
Programs should be underway and that the budget reports should
be in by August 15,.1977.
Chairman Shull gave the tennis report from Tennis Director
Howard Threlkeld. He said that over 600 people had signed up
for the Tennis Tournament and that everything was going good.
Acting Programs Director Joe Dean brought up that he
needed some money for his gas expense. Chairman Shull said that
he should be reimbursed for his gas expense and that he should
save his gas receipts.
There being no further business to come before the Board
the meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
