HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-16-1977 Regular MeetingTHE FAIRHOPE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD Minutes for meeting March 16, 1977 The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session on Wednesday, March 16, 1977, at 7:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama, with Chairman Barney L. Shull presiding. The following members were present: Mrs. Stephanie Montgomery, Mrs. Jean Smith, Mr. Charlie Gravat, and Mr. David Stapleton. Also present were Facilities Director Phil Rutherford and Councilman Billy D. Wiggins. Programs Director Ed Nelson was not present. Puest present: Councilman Jack Stip_es, President of Youth Activities Tommy Springer, and Young Street Director's Al Bosby and Leslie Perdue. The minutes of the February 9, 1977 meeting were read and approved as recorded. The bill's .for the month were also approved. Chairman Barney Shull opened the meeting for discussion of old business. He.recomnended before the Board to get some portables for the Girl's Softball League. Mr. Charlie Gravat moved, seconded by Stephanie Montgomery. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford quoted a price of $1650.00 each for portable bleachers to he used at the fields. Chairman Barney Shull suggested that we hold off_ for purchase of these bleachers till later. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford suggested that the concession stand at the ball park on Volanta Avenue be fixed. He also suggested the need for more toilets at the ladies restroom. Chairman Barney Shull and the Board authorized Phil Rutherford to check around for the best cheap toilets he could find. With further discussion, Phil Rutherford said that the fertilization of the fields needed to be done as soon as possible. Uso, he stated that the crack in the swinuning pool needed to be repaired and should be bided on. Chairman Barney Shull agreed that Phil Rutherford trade in the old tractor mower for a larger one. With no further discussion for old business, new business was opened for discussion. Councilman .Jack Stipes wanted the Recreation Board's feelings on the City purchasing some $35,000.00 worth of equipment and the possibility of the Recreation Board appropriating some money for this cause. Mr. Charlie Gravat stated that this should be discussed further. Mrs. Jean Smith expressed that this should be worked in the budget. Chairman Barney Shull suggested that some money be set aside for equipment usage The Board agreed to think about this matter. a r r Fairhope Park and Recreation Page 2 Minutes for for meeting 16, 197716, 1977 Councilman Billy Wiggins requested to the Recreation Board that he be notified forehand if anything is to be approved by the City Council. President of Youth Activities Tammy Springer brought up before the Board the following matters: (1) No funds for the year of 1976 was spent for the Eastern Shore Youth Baseball Association. (2) Scoreboards were needed for the minor and major leagues. (3) A press -box was needed as soon as possible. (4) Cement was needed in the dug -outs. Chairman Barney Shull stated that the money was appropriated for the Baseball Association but was never spent. As far as the press -box ,was concerned, he suggested that they draw a sketch for this. Mr. Charlie Gravat moved, seconded by David Stapleton that the Board appropriate 8250.00 for cost of scoreboards to go with the $1600.00 for Youth Baseball totaling $1850.00. Young Street Director's Al Bosby and Leslie Perdue requested before the Board the need for softball's, face guards, and also dirt for under the playground. Chairman Barney Shull suggested that they get a sponsor in getting some uniforms. Tommy Springer said he could get some uniforms for $150.00 if they would get a sponsor. Mr. Charlie Gravat moved, seconded by David Stapleton for $100.00 expenditure for equipment for the Young Street Recreation Center. Member David Stapleton put in his resignation from the Recreation Board. Chairman Barney Shull suggested he be awarded a certificate for eight years of service on the Recreation Board. Mr. Shull also expressed his appreciation and kindness for his service to the Recreation Board. Mr. Charlie Cravat moved, seconded by Stephanie Montgomery that the Soccer Association and Optimist Club use the football field April 9, 1977, for a Soccer Match. Mr. Charlie Gravat stated that we put in letter .form to the Fairhope Optimist Club that the stadium can be used if it is maintained clean and that it should be used only this time for soccer. As this will be a time for the Soccer Club and the Optimist Club to meet together, we feel sure you will do your best to maintain the upkeep of the field. Being this field is made specifically for football, we recommend that it should be used for soccer play only this one time unless otherwise authorized. Thank you for your interest in use of the football stadium. If the Fairhope Recreation Board can ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call on us.
