Minutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board The Fairhope Recreation Board met on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024, at 5:15 p.m. at Recreation Center located at 803 N. Greeno Road in Fairhope, Alabama. Present: Lisa Atchley, Pat White, Charlie Langham, Cathy Hudson, Josh Warren, Scott Berry, Corey Martin, and Jack Burrell. Absent: Haden Giddings, Dan Hoover, Maurice Morrisette, and Debra Flowers. The meeting was called to order by Lisa Atchley at 5:16 p.m. The minutes of the January 17th, 2024, meeting minutes were considered and approved on a motion by Lisa Atchley, seconded by Josh Warren, none opposed. Guest(s): Mayor Sherry Sullivan and Youth Programs Coordinator, Cole Wagner. Recreation Updates: Pat White informed the Rec Board of the following: ● The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Track & Field Complex at Founders Park was held on February 20th with 100+ kids participating in the ceremonial 1st lap. ● A new concrete walkway was installed up the hillside from the gravel lot behind the football stadium to the new baseball fields. ● The 2-story press box structure on the old youth baseball Ozone field was demolished. A new concrete pad was poured so an open-air scorekeeping pavilion can be constructed using in-house labor. ● The concession stand building at Founders softball had new metal siding installed, while the concession stand building at FYB will start their metal siding installation this week. ● All 5 softball fields at Founders Park had new infield stone applied to the infields. This will help with playability and maintenance. Youth softball’s opening day is scheduled for March 9th. ● Crews have been working at Volanta Park changing out old cross ties in the playground areas, adding new mulch, edging, and detailing the fields, and general clean-up of the park. FYB will be having a park workday this Saturday and opening day is also set for March 9th. ● The new scoreboard, purchased by FHS Baseball, is currently being installed. ● The old Dixie baseball field has been converted to a 60/90 field and the infield was renovated for better safety and playability. The Freshman High School baseball team will be hosting a game on it tomorrow. ● Starting this week, installation of concrete will begin on the driving range at Quail Creek for artificial turf mats. There will still be hitting stations on natural grass as well. Council awarded the bid to have the cart paths renovated and that is currently being scheduled. ● Some of the Rec Center employees attended a lecture this morning hosted by our police department on Active Shooter situations. We are setting a date for them to come to the Rec Center and pool to educate all the staff on how to deal with a possible situation. Recreation New Business: Lisa Atchley informed the Rec Board that she received resignation letters from 2 Rec Board Members, Haden Giddings and Dan Hoover. General discussion was had again regarding moving forward with the Recreation 5 -year Plan. General discussion was had regarding the fee structures for the Track & Field Complex at Founders Park. USSA has expressed interest in using the entire complex. Josh Warren made a motion to recommend to the City Council that no outside use/rental on the Track & Field Complex at Founders Park (minus Fairhope Middle & High School and citizens of Fairhope) till December 31st, 2024, and 2nd by Charlie Langham, motion passed unanimously. Charlie Langham made a motion to recommend to the City Council to update current fee schedule on the Facility Rental Agreement to include labor and maintenance costs for stadium rental, along with establishing a new fee raise for future stadium rentals, and 2nd by Lisa Atchley, motion passed unanimously. Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:23 p.m.
