THE FAIRHOPE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular
session on Wednesday, September 17, 1975t- at 7:30 P.M., at the
City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope,
Alabama, with Chairman Barney L. Shull presiding.
The following members were present : Jack Stipes, Charlie
Gravat, David Stapleton, and Jean Smith. Also present were
Facilities Director Cleve Crow and Programs Directors Coach John
Lee, and Coach Eddie Nelson,
Guests Present : Mrs. Anna Wood and the workers with the
Young Street Creative Arts Program, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Lindsey
with the Adult and Tourist Recreation Center, Tennis Director
Howard Threlkeld, Mr. Bob Love and Mr. Tommy Cotton.
The minutes of the August 20, 1975 meeting were approved as
recorded.
Mrs. Anna Wood along with the other representatives of the
Young Street Creative Arts Program presented their list of the
things which needed the most urgent attention.at the Young Street
Recreation Center, Chairman Barney Shull said that the first six
maintainence items would be given immediate attention.
The Ladies also said that they would like to see the Young Street
Recreation Center open all year long, with a possibility of a
program for adults. Ms. Jean Smith, one of the representatives of
the Young Street Creative Arts Program said that she would willingly
work on a program all year round if the Building could be made
available on that basis. A request for an additional appropriation
of $ 100.00 for supplies was discussed, and Chairman Shull said that
it would be considered when the Budget for the Fiscal Year 1975 to
1976 was discussed.
Mr. Howard Threlkeld , along with Mr. Bob Love and Mr. Tommy
Cotton presented their plans for increasing the Tennis Facilities
on Greeno Road. The plan proposed three ( 3 ) phases of building.
Phase I: Four Tennis Courts and a Pro Shop.
wO&ase II: Four Tennis Courts
Phase III: Four Tennis Courts
The final proposed outcome would be twelve ( 12 ) new Tennis Courts,
and a Pro:Shop, with an approximate cost of $ 35,000.00 to $ 40,000.00.
Mr. Threlkeld said that there was sufficient room for these additional
courts on Greeno Road. It was mentioned that this would be a controlled
type�of Facility, with no access except thru controlled access.
Mr. Threlkeld said that the reason they were proposing th6rplan was so
that action could be started on some type of increased facilities, and
they wanted to get recommendations from the Recreation Board as to how
they could get started.Chairman Shull recommended that they go back
to the Tennis Players and see what they could do about getting funds
raised in order to proceed with application to the B.O.R. for matching
funds. Mr. Shull stated that before funds could be applied for, the
matching funds had to be available.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Lindsey presented their report on the Adult
and Tourist Recreation Center. The report told of the various activities
and programs which had taken place in the past year, along with the
improvements which had been made to the building.Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey
asked that their appropriation of $ 2,400.00 be renewed.
Coach John Lee and Coach Eddie Nelson discussed with the Board
the various programs which they had planned for the year. After a
discussion, the Recreation Board members told them that they had their
support in the programs.

Member David Stapleton made a motion to pay all bills as the funds
became available. Jack Stipes seconded the motion. Motion Carried.
Facilities Director Cleve Crow presented a list on the prices for
labor and materials on the bath and pump houses at the Greeno Pool.
Jack Stipes moved to allocate $ 1,300.00 for repairs of the bath and pump
housesincluding labor. Charlie Gravat seconded the motion. Motion Carried.
Chairman Braney Shull presented the proposed budget for the Fiscal
Year 1975 thru 1976. The same amounts which were projected for revenues
for the last fiscal year were projected again for the coming fiscal year.
The Board projected the expenditures in the various departments, with
the total revenues being anticipated as $ 38,000.00 , and the total exp-
enditures being anticipated as $ 38,000.00.
Member Jack Stipes made a motion to have the Recreation Board look
into the taxes on Tobacco, and see if the Recreation Board was receiving
revenue on tobaccos other than cigarettes. Jean Smith seconded the motion.
Motion Carried.
It was mentioned that the Recreation Board members would meet with
The Fairhope City Council on Monday, September 22, 1975, to discuss the
financial situation of the Fairhope Recreation Board.
There being no further business to oome before the Board the meeting
was adjourned at 9:35 P.M.
