HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-19-1975 Regular MeetingTHE FAIRHOPE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session on Wednesday June 19, 1975 at 7:30 P.M. at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama, with Chairman Barney Shull presiding. Members present: Mr. Charlie Gravat; Mr. David Stapleton; and Ms. Jean Smith. Members absent : Mr. Jack Stipes and Director Coach W.C. Majors. Guests present: Mrs. Anna Wood, Director of the Young Street Creative Arts Program and Ms. Gretchen Riggs of the Young Street Program. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded. Mrs. Wood presented a report on the activities of the Young Street Creative Arts Program. She also presented a list of various maintainence problems. Samples of ceramic works made by the young people participating in the program were shown to the board members. The following maintainence problems were discussed: 1. Storage Problem: Mrs. Wood stated that storage was the biggest problem at the center at this time. She said that there was no where to store the art materials and supplies. -2- Chairman Barney Shull said that every effort would be made to see that the building at Stimpson Field which was earmarked for the Young Street Center would be moved to Young Street in order correct the storage problem. 2. RED SAND: Mrs. Wood said that there was red sand placed where gravel should be and that it was being tracked into the center and ruining the new floor . Mr. Charlie Gravat said that he would take a look at the situation and report back to the board as to what would be the best way to correct the problem. 3. DECISIONS ABOUT MAKING IMPROVEMENTS: Mrs. Wood suggested that the Board talk with the ladies who worked at the Young Street Center about improvements which needed to be made. Ms. Wood stated that the ladies working in the center had some good ideas about what needed to be done. Chairman Shull asked Mrs. Wood to ask the ladies working at the center if they would like to report anything to the Recreation Board . 4. LARGE AREA OF FLOOR IN POOL ROOM COVERED WITH WATER: Mrs. Wood said that there was a large area of the floor in the pool room covered with water and that they can't use the area for painters. She mentioned that they have to paint in the dramatics room or outside in the hot sun. Ms. Wood also said that the water was rotting the floor boards and doing quite a lot of.damage. Jo, -3- • 5. DOOR NEEDED AT BOY'S BATHROOM OR THE HALL LEADING TO ITP: Mrs. Wood requested that a door be put up at the boy's restroom or hallway leading up to the rest room. 6. KEY NEEDED FOR THE BUILDING: Mrs. Wood said that they needed a key for the building so that they could get into the building to clean up and prepare for the sessions before the children arrived , also that they needed to sometimes have staff meetings before the sessions. Chairman Shull said that he would contact John Robinson about getting a key made for them. 71 Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Lymous will attend work session in Mobile. Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Lymous will attend a workshop in Mobile sponsored by the City of Mobile and the University of South Alabama.She said that perhaps they could learn of some new ideas, etc. Chairman Shull said that the Recreation Board would authorize re- imbursement for any costs such as gasoline that they might have, It was mentioned that the final day would be .July 20, for the session at the Young Street Center, at which time they would present their exhibits and programs. Chairman Shull mentioned a possibility of displaying :beme of.the crafts in the lobby at City Hall. The final item brought up for discussion was the possibility of an outdoor pavilion for the center. Mrs. Wood thanked the Recreation Board for the fan installed in the center. The RAtreation Board thanked Mrs. Wood for her efforts in making the program such a success. -4- The bills for the month of May were gone over. David Stapleton made a motion to pay all of the bills. Jean Smith seconded the motion. Motion Carried. Chairman Barney Shull presented Coach Majors letter of resignation to the Board. Chairman Shull said that Coach Majors would remain as Director of the Recreation Board until the middle of July, and that Coach Majors had coordinated the summer program so that there should be no problems. Mr. Shull added that there was no need to make a hasty decision as to who would become the Director and that the Recreation Board should be able to decide in the fall of the year. Charlie Gravat made a motion acknowledging the receipt of the letter of resignation from Director W.C. Majors with regret , and although the Recreation Board doss not accept the resignation as such , they do receive the letter with deep regret and thoughts for the future of the Recreation Department of the City of Fairhope. David Stapleton seconded the motion. Motion Carried. There being no further business to come before the Board the meeting was adjourned.
