HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-16-1975 Regular Meeting0 THE FAIRHOPE PARK AND RECREATION BOAF The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session Wednesday April 16, 1975 at the City Administration Building at 700 P.M. with the following members presents Chairman: Barney Shull; Members: David Stapleton; Jack Stipes; Charlie Gravat-f Jean Smith and Director Coach W.C. Majors. Guests in attendances Mr. Howard Threlkeld and Mr. John Robinson. The minutes of the February meeting were approved as recorded. The bills for the month were gone over. Member David Stapleton made a motion seconded by Charlie Gravat to pay all bills. Motion Carried, Mr. Howard Threlkeld discussed the re -surfacing of the Tennis Courts, Mr. Threlkeld stated that he would need ten more gallons of paint. Member Jack Stipes made a motion authorizing Mr. Threlkeld to purchase additional paint. Motion was seconded by David Stapleton. Motion carried. Mr. Howard Threlkeld stated that there were trees that would have to be cut down in order to maintain the Tennis Courts. David Stapleton moved to give Mr. Threlkeld the authority to cut down any trees that were necessary to maintain the Tennis Courts. The motion was seconded by Jack Stipes. Motion Carried. Mr. Threlkeld asked for re -consideration on the purchase of a gate -for'the back fence. Mr. Threlkheld asked for the Recreation Board to approach the School Board about repairing the Elementary and High School Tennis Courts, stating that they were in need of repairs. Mr. John Robinson requested that this years project at the Young Street Recreation Center be the re -doing of the floor. There was one quotation price from Fairhope Floor Covering of $ 19630.00. Chairman Shull brought out the fact that the Recreation Board would have to invite three bids for re -doing the floor to three contractors. Member Jack Stipes made a motion to authorize Coach W.C. Majors to talk with three contractors and accept the lowest bid to redo the floor. Motion seconded by David Stapleton. Motion carried. Mr. John Robinson discussed materials that he would need for a Back- Stop. Mr. Robinson stated that the labor would be voluntary and that they would install the dug -out themselves. Member Charlie Gravat made a motion authorizing Coach W.C. Majors to spend up to $ 200.00 for materials needed for the back stop. Jack Stipes seconded the motion. Motion carried. Member Jack Stipes stated that the Recreation Board should send Dr. R.H. Johnson a letter of appreciation for his serving on the Recreation Board. Chairman Shull said that the letter should be signed by Mayor James P. Nix. It was mentioned that a copy of the letter would be published in the Eastern Shore Courier. The functions of the Recreation Board and the budget were gone over for the benifit of new member Mrs. Jean Smith. Chairman Shull presented a letter of request from the Little League. The letter requested that the Recreation Board install a fan in the concession stand . The price for the fan would be approximately $ 125.00, A discussion followed suggesting the use of powered turbine. Coach W.C. Majors was asked to meet with Ms. Jean Pitman about the possibility of using powered turbinsp with the idea that the City of Fairhope would install the turbins and the Recreation Board would pay for the needed materials. Member Jack Stipes moved to authorize Coach Majors to ventilate the concession stand with an expenditure of up to $ 125.00. Motion was seconded by Jean Smith. Motion Carried. There was a discussion of the installation of extra lights at the swimming pool. It was agreed that after the summer season started if there was a need for extra lights that it would be up to the discretion of Director Coach W.C. Majors to install them. Chairman Shull presented the letter of request from 'the Veterans Administration regarding Recreational Facilities for handicapped veterans. The letter was turned over to the Recreation Board secretary for attention. The budget of Mrs. Anna Woods Young Street Art Program was discussed. The budget requested $ 300.00 for materials needed and an additional $ 500.00 for labor expenses. Coach W.C. Majors stated his support of Mrs. Wood's program. Member Jack Stipes moved to accept the budget as presentedp seconded by Charlie Otavat • Motion carried. There being no further business to come before the Board the motion was madev seconded and passed that the meeting be adjourned.
