HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-19-1975 Regular MeetingRecreatio__ Board Meeting �l Of The Fairhope Park and Recreation Board met in regular session Wednesday, February 19, 1975 at 7:30 P.M. at the City Administration Building with the following members present: Chairman; Barney Shull; Members : Dr. R.H. Johnson; David Stapleton and Director Coach W.C. Majors. Members Absent : Mr. C. Gravett and Mr. Jack Stipes Guests in Attendance: Mr. John Robinson and Mr. Dennis of the Young Street Recreation Center. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded. Mr. Dennis asked if the lights at the Young Street Center could be turned back on. Mr. John Robinson said that the lights were being turned on and left by children at the center. Chairman Barney Shull said that he would take care of the light situation. The changes in the Recreation Board were explained to Mr. Robinson. The bills for the month were gone over. Dr. Johnson moved to pay all bills with the exception of the utility bill of The City of Fairhope; in the amount of $ 474.63 and the Fairhope Single Tax for colony rent in the amount of $ 953.25. The motion was seconded by David Stapleton. Motion Carried. Member David Stapleton brought up the need for restroom facilities at the Tennis Courts. It was mentioned that that the supervision of the facilities would be hard to control. No action was taken. The appropriation of $ 1600.00 to the Babe Ruth league was moved by Dr. Johnson and seconded by David Stapleton. Motion carried. Monies were appropriated for the Fiscal Year 1975 budget. After the members allocated the projected revenues , ai motion was made by Dr. Johnson that the proposed budget be adopted as presented; seconded by David Stapleton. Motion Carried. Coach Majors requested that the Recreation Board approve $ 400.00 for half of the cost of purchasing a Sauna Heater; with the school paying the other half of the cost. This $ 400.00 would come out of the monies appropriated for Facilities Improvements. Member David Stapleton suggested that perhaps a fee for membership of $ 10.00 annually could be charged. A motion was made be David Stapleton to authorize Director Coach Majors to purchase items needed to complete project at the Swimming Pool. Seconded by Dr. Johnson; Motion Carried. Recreation Board Meeting ( Con't. ) Member David Stapleton made a motion to present to the City Council for consideration an increase in cigarette tax of one cent per pack so that the Recreation Board would have sufficient funds to operate within the proposed budget. Motion was seconded and passed. Chairman Barney Shull stated that he would like to get together a list of reasons to present to the City Council to justify an increase in cigarette taxes. Coach Majors gave his recommendation that it would not be necessary to purchase a gate for the Tennis Courts but rather that the Recreation Board use the money to buy paints and materials to repair the courts. Chairman Barney Shull presented a letter from Faulkner State Junior College requesting the use of the Tennis Court near the elementary school. The College said that they would pay rental charges. Coach Majors said that due to the already extensive programs now active within our own school system that we could not obligate the court for the time wanted by Faulkner State. The letter was turned over to the Recreation Board Secretary for reply. The increase in the Recreation Board Secretary's salary was discussed and a motion made by David Stapleton to increase the Recreation Board Secretary's salary from the present $ 20.00 per month to $ 50.00 per month due to the increased duties that will have to be performed. Motion seconded by Dr. Johnson. Motion carried. There being no further business to come before the Board motion madegsecondedgand passed that the meeting be adjourned. We have found that it is necessary to do this in order to avoid any misunderstandings that have occured in the past Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
