The progr, consisted of ten sessions: 1 planning s, ion, 2 workshops
for lei',?ers, 5 class sessions, 1 demonstratior, exhibit of own work, visit
to local Art Association exhibit, st,ii and 1 evaluation and planning session.
86 children participated in the program, with 8 adult leaders. Other
Interested adults visited from time to time. While one group painted with
Imes. Zuver, Wood, Porter and Powe the other group enacted skits, studied
current songs and read their own and other Black poetry with !Imes. Riggs,
Conway, Pettis and Hunt. Plans are already being made for training during
the winter in order that the program be improved and expanded next year.
At the evaluation session it was voted that the coordinator receive
a salary and that the coordinator begin to train a partner to handle finances,
supplies and gradually assume responsibility for the program.
Our purposes for the Art Program were considered and it was agreed that
they had been accomplished. Learnings on the part of leaders were shared.
Mrs. Peg Cambell, a newcomer to Fairhope,
teach the leaders embroidery so that they might
and young people. She also explained how this
skill. It was decided to meed each week for a
training.
Other items under consideration:
was present and offered to
in turn teach other ladies
could become a money -making
series of sessions for this
1. Establishing a small group of young people for language training
2. An outdoor theatrical event
3. Something especially for boys, possibly carpentry
4. Training a choral group
5. Gardening or foundation plantings around the Center
6. Need for another room and for air conditioning and storage.
7. Possibility of inviting all school children, before school is out, to
attend next year
8. Value of this program in helping keep children out of trouble as well as
helping them be creative and unafraid.
9. Expansion is needed
10. Need to let day school teachers know what is happening at the Center.
11. Possibility of feature article for The Christian Science Monitor
IE WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE THE RECREATION BOARD TO BEGIN NOW TO BUDGET AND
PLAIT FOR THE ADDTTION OF ANOTHER LARGE ROOM WITH STORAGE FOR FOLDING TABLES
AND CHAIRS AND AIR CONDITIONING FOR THE CEITTER.
With leadership skills developing in the Blacks and assistance from
others in specific areas, this program has fantastic potential. I am con-
tinually being amazed at the initiative and committment expressed by the
leaders of this program. Given the physical facilities and modest financing
they will provide the rest.
Respectfully submitted,
Anna C. Wood, Coordinator
