Eula Smith, Secretary 4 ADULT AND TOURIST RECREATION CLUB REPORT OCTOBER 1, 1970 to SEPT. 15, 1971 The winter season began with the annual Rock and Gem Show which raz for three days. The show was well attended as usual and was success- ful from all wigles. We have decided to change the dates of this event in the future to the first week -end of Arts and Crafts Week in the spring due to the Mobile Gem and Mineral Society having sche4uled a week long show in conjunction with the Greater Gulf States Fair, which is the last week in October. We do not feel that this area will sup- porttwo such shows only a week apart. All our dealers have approved the new dates and expressed their desire for space next spring. Our membership for the winter season increased to a total of 185. Our programs for the winter season followed the usual pattern with pot ludo suppers on the first and third Thursdays. Handcraft classes and workshop on Mondays, with the members making items for sale during Arts and Crafts Week. Tuesday afternoons as usual were devoted to cards, chess and other ga.dl games with refreshments. These were well attended, reflecting the in- crease in membership and the added comfort of the hall, provided by the new heating system and the air-conditioning. Wednesday afternoons were given to Ceramics, with Mrs. Della Lawrence as instructor. The membership participating in this activity are re- quired to buy all material and tools used. Mrs. Lawrence fires the finished pieces for a minimal charge. While it is not required, about 25 / of the finished items are donated to the club for sale at Arts arad Crafts Wbek, and at other times. Friday afternoons of each week are donned to Watercolor Class, with Mrs. Lucille Kubichek as instructor. The same rulas apply to this class as the Ceramics with members furnishing supplies etc. Both these groin have fine displays in the hall which have attracted much favorable com- ment. It is planned to keep an art exhibit in the hall during the win-e ter season which in most cases will be for sale. T!Ke summer season to date has gone well, with a very substantial in- crease in membership and attendance over the previous summers. This is due to more of our members staying in Fairhope for all, or the greater part of the summer. Also the added comfort of air conditioning brings more people out for more activity. The addition of Shuffleboard and Table Tennis to our indoor fare has increased our attendance. These games have replaced Ceramics classes during the summer and have made opening on Sunday afternoons advisable. The amounts received as memorial gifts from the family oU Mr. Grabham, and Hr. Scheer have been used to purchase 24 new folding chairs. A gift from friends of Mrs. Laura Newell has been used to purchase three new card tables and we have eniugh for two more. The amount received as dues from the members will have been expended by the end of the season -for food and refreshments. The Cl*-has been very generous in furnishing labor and material for finishing and painting the Ladies room. This has been very much appreciated by our ladies. We are very anxious to purchase a motion picture projector, with sound and any money left, after absolutely essential expenses will be increased at every opportunity for this project. The budget approved for last year in the amount of $2400.00 was used as follows: Salaries of Directors $1800.00 Salaries for other instructors 360.00 Paper Oroducts etc. 85.00 F I C A Tax ( our part) 115.00 Misc. Postage, Printing etc. 40.00 $2400-00 We respectfully request that the same budget he approved for the year beginning October 1, 1971. /4 p Se t. 15 1971 n (> MRS.
