The Fmirhope Park and Recreation Board met on Wed-
nesday, February 10, 1971 at 7:30 P.M. at City Hall in
Fairhope, Alabama.
Present: Chairman B. L. Shull; members: Mr. Gordon
Burton, Mr. David Stapleton, Dr. R.H. Johnson, Mr. D. T. Chat -
wood. Directors: W. C. Majors and Perry Lowery.
Guests: Mr. Dick Preisgen, Mr. Don Smith, Mr. Jerry Anderson;
Mr. John Robinson and Mr. John Hobbs representing Young St.,
Recreation Area. Also in attendance was City Superintendent
Mr. Jack Kirk.
Dr. Johnson moved to approve minutes of last regular
meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Burton, carried unanimously.
Motion by Dr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Burton to ap-
prove bills for payment with exception of $43.40 to City Mar-
ket, which bill should have been $5.84. motion carried unani-
mously.
Mr. Jerry Anderson, representing Men's Softball Program
discussed with Board the need of ball parks or improvement to
Stimpson Field. He was informed that two practice fields are
in future plans for Greeno Park, which plans were displayed
for both softball park and little league practice fields.
It was reported that the City Council had approved
construction of rest -rooms at the young Street Recreation Cen-
ter which will cost approximately $5,000-.00. Mr. Kirk stated
that rest -rooms will be constructed of'Clay City Tile 8" walls
also went' using concrete blocks which are in stock.
Audit was discussed and budget for new years expenses
set up. It was noted that operational expenses amounted to
$32,000.00 last year which will be cut to $25,000.00 for this
years program. Ceiling on salaries to be set at $12,000.00.
Tennis program discussed. monthly tournaments City wide
with a minimum of four girls and four boys to each team. Regis-
tration at City Hall for those interested persons will be in
charge of Mrs. Eula Smith, Board's Secretary. Ages 10 to 14
included in program. If there is good response there will be
another registration at a later date.
Mr. Shull reviewed history of Board and its respon-
sibilities as set out in the Alabama Code. The main responsi-
bility being directing of expenditures to better benefit the
citizens of the Municipality.
Letter from Mrs. Alma (Daisy.) Vines, who was Director
of Creative Arts for Summer Program was read to Board . Mrs.
Vines submits her resignation with regrets to Board.
Motion by Mr. Stapleton, seconded by Mr. Chatwood to
accept resignation of Mrs. Vines. Motion carried.
The Board wishes to express their thanks to Mrs. Vines
for her outstanding program and the way in which it was opera-
ted.
The Recreation Board expressed their appreciation to
Mr. John Robinson for his outstanding activities in seeing that
the Young Street Park Area Program was a success and for his
personal labor connected with same.
There being no further business, upon motion, duly
seconded and carried the meeting adjourned.
