FAIRHOPE
GOLF COURSE
Fairhope people will soon see the ful ent of a
long drawn and remote hope — an 18 hole golf course,
municipally organized, membership funded.
This will not be just another golf course, built on
low cost land, sparsely grassed, and poorly watered. On
the contrary, it will be of good yardage; perhaps 6,500
to 7,000 yards; built on a varying terrain replete with
slopes and levels in its fairways, a "dog -leg" hole on
each nine; level, grassy driving tees; and good sized
greens with a roll here and there to tax the putting
wizards. Five sites, each conveniently close to Fairhope,
are being appraised and considered.
To obtain necessary capital, the organizers have
suggested the sale of Charter Memberships. The price
will be $150.00. Memberships will be classified as to:
Individual, Husband and Wife, Family, and Business.
Dues will be charged monthly with a fixed price for
each class of membership. As yet, no actual figures have
been established for these dues, but it appears they will
be about one-third or one-half the price of nearby
"private" clubs.
The Fairhope Recreation Board has published and
circulated an information card with Membership Ap-
plication form. This solicitation has brought in 580
signers who indicate that they are ready to use and
support an 18 hole golf layout. It is assumed that
Charter Memberships sold here will produce at least
$60,000.00. Upon the collection of this money, the
City of Fairhope, through action of its council, has
agreed to match this amount. With $120,000.00 avail-
able the City or the Fairhope Recreation Board can
petition the Federal Bureau of Beautification and Out-
door Recreation for an equal amount. Upon its receipt
the project will be launched and completed in less
than one year.
Wit rids coming from local and federal sources,
this golf course will be one that is open to everyone.
Those who do not contract for Charter Memberships
may play on a daily fee basis.
Revenues obtained from monthly dues and daily
fees will be used to meet payroll, maintain and repair
greens, mowers, and fairway machinery, buy grass seed
and fertilizer.
A small service center will be built. Here there will
be a golf shop and office. Balls, clubs, gloves, hats and
caps will be available. A refreshment counter will be a
part of this building.
The golf club will be affiliated with the United
States Golf Association, and all play will be in ac-
cordance with its rules. For a small charge the Associa-
tion will survey our course and establish its rating and
handicap system. Through this affiliation The Fairhop-.
Golf Club will be listed with about 3,000 other clubs
in the United States as a bona fide golfing operation.
Certain individuals in Fairhope have volunteered
to help in securing Charter Members for the course.
Others will assume the responsibility of setting up a
sound governing body, while yet another group will aid
in setting out a good financial plan for continued pro-
fitable operation.
This golf club can be a source of great pleasure to
you. It will go far toward making Fairhope — your
home — an even better recreational area.
