City Hall
Members presents Dr. Johnson, Mr. Chatwood, Mr. Burton, Mr.
Stipes and Mr. Shull.
Absents None.,
Guests: Mr. Sarge Turner and representatives from the Colored
Community.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read. Mr. Burton requested
that the minutes be amended as follows:
Mr. Burton reported that the tennis courts at the grade
school needed resurfaoing, nets repaired, and lights checked.
The minutes were then approved as amended.
Mr. Stipes reported on repairing the Colored ballpark at an
approximate cost of $1500.00. Mr. Chatwood moved, Mr. Burton
seconded, to proceed with plans for repairing the Colored
ballpark at an approximate cost of $1500.00. Motion carried.
Mr. Jack Kirk and Mr. Stipes were authorized to monitor these
Improvements,
Mr. Stipes informed the Board that the City Council had agreed
to pay for the wharf repairs.
It was reported that Dr. Stine is in the process of checking the
possibility of the Armory and the 2 new gyms at Fairhope and
Daphne being used in the Recreation Program,
Mr. Chatwood agreed to contact Dr. Holliday concerning baseball
Insurance, Chairman Shull read a letter from Huffman Insurance
Company which outlined a proposed liability coverage rate for
the City. It was suggested that this letter be forwarded to the
City Council for their recommendation.
Mr. Stipes reported that the City Council at their meeting on
March 89 1965 authorized the Recreation Board to proceed with
plans for restrooms and other necessary facilities for the
opening of the Swimming Pool. Chairman Shull agreed to prepare
the plans for presentation at a special meeting to be called by
him.
Mr. Stipes discussed repairs to a building on Twin Beach Road
which might be used in the Colored Recreation Program.
Professor Carroll, spokesman for the group present from the
Colored Community, asked that the Board defer action on this
building and the hiring of a Colored Recreation Manager until
further notice. The Board agreed to table any action until
further notice.
Mr. Stipes agreed to check with the editor of the Fairhope Courier
concerning rates for printing minutes of the Recreation Boar
and special notices of meetings.
Mr. Sarge Turner requested that the softball field be made ready
for use before the 24th of March. The Board granted his request.
Mr. Shull reported that plans are in motion for Fairhope to
become a member of the National Recreation Association. The
Chairman also reported on his discussion with the Mobile
Recreation Directors.
Applications for Recreation Director and Summer Personnel were
discussed. Mr. Stipes read Coach Major's overall plan for the
Summer Program Personnel.

Mr. Chatwood moved, Mr. Burton seconded, that the Recreation
Board hire Coach W. C. Majors as Director of the Summer Recrea-
tion Program. Motion carried unanimously.
The Board agreed to meet with Coach Majors on Sunday afternoon,
March 14 at 2:30 P. M.
Mr. Stipes suggested that a list of the equipment needs for the
Connie Mack and Little League teams be prepared.
Dr. Johnson moved, Mr. 3tipes seconded that the meeting adjourn.
