The Airport Board of the City of Fairhope met Monday, December 12, 1994
at 8:00 AM at the City Municipal Complex, 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Chairman Sue Mason; members Jeanette Puckett, Andy Huggins,
Bill Payne, Robert Colling. Secretary Betty Rivenbark
The minutes were approved as discussed and a financial statement was given.
The board had received an application from Magnolia Creek Aircraft Sales, Inc/
Arve W. Henriksen, Jr. The board took time to look over their application.
They are asking for 1 /3 of floor space and 1 /4 of office space in building
but did not propose a lease amount for the large hanger located on the north
end of the airport. Sue mentioned anyone who does rent it, we would like
them to keep the crash truck and equipment in this area. Sue asked for
questions and thoughts and Andy said if/when we rent it we should at
least consider halfing the building, not 3/4 - 1 /4. Their application is in the
file. They had wished to start up as of January 1, 1995. They are an aircraft
sales company and wishes to go into a full maintenance operation.
Mr. .Robt.Cameron and Arlene L. Osley were also present to talk to the board
about the possibility of starting a aircraft painting operation in the south
paint hangar. They also requested office, shop and locker room space.
(application in file) They outlined what they wished to do. They did say that
they are not in business now but wished to start this business. They would
paint and strip aircraft. They said they were environmentally sound, there
would be no hazardous waste. The paint and exhaust would be filtered out.
They could handle up to a 727. They propose to paint 4 a month w/4-5 employees.
Mr. Cameron said they would be using a teflon coating and it would be warrantied.
they had submitted a proposal on the length of the lease. They said primarily
would be small aircraft. Sue asked if our expansion project would hamper them
and they said no. After hearing their proposal they were thanked for coming .
Mr. Al Beech of Teledyne Continental submitted an application as a full FBO
operator at the airport. They proposed to start in March 1995 with a 2 year
lease and 3-5 year options. He said they would provide an initial investment
of $150,000 for renovation and would need approximately 60 days for the re-
furbishing. Mr. Beech told of their projections for the next 7 years. He
went over the history leading up to Mobile facility and the decline in the aviation
industry. He said they now have 21 restructured companies and piston engine
manufacturing is the core of the business. He said the key ingredinet missing
from their business is customer contact. He said they drew plans for Brookley
but after looking at big plan and numbers the plan did not jell. He said they
would overhaul 8-10 a month and 250 a year is their goal. He said it normally
would take 4 days to overhaul and they would offer a training package. He
was asked how he would deal with the existing tenants. He said they would
continue to provide for them and build on the relationships there. Sue talked
about the construction project. He did say that the engine business requires
some strip painting but they would put in required environmental controls that
would be necessary. He was asked about space to keep the crash truck and
he said we could work that out. He said he would like to take what there now
and build on it. He said they would pay $7,000 a month. We had tried to
get the ADEM information for him but they have not been able to furnish it
yet. He talked about the fuel distributor, possibly city doing some landscaping
along the entrance/ roadway. He said the employees there could stay. Sue told
him everything would be in working order when he takes it over.
Further discussion led to a motion being proposed to recommend to the city
council approval of the Teledyne proposal to run the airport as a general
FBO at a cost of $7,000 a month. Jeanette Puckett seconded motion and
it passed unanimously.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
