P. J. Hannon called the meeting to order and the November 1st meeting minutes were
approved.
Leadership of the meeting was turned over the incoming chairman Joe Kelley, who shared
opening remarks and introduced newly appointed member David Johnson.
Jon Cardwell shared a chart showing the recently-released state report card scores in the area
of academic achievement for all Alabama high schools close in size to Fairhope. With a score of
84.1, Fairhope ranked 5th, below LAMP, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and New Century
Technology, and ahead of some very good schools.
Janet Appleby, representing thelocal chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
shared an overview of a presentation called Ending the Silence that NAMI would like to offer to
all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in Baldwin County schools. Programs brought from outside the
school system must get clearance from the central office, so principals and commission
members were asked to express support for making this program available to local students.
Joe Kelley called for discussion of two applicants seeking appointment to the open commission
seat vacated by Hill Robinson (term completed in December). After discussion of applicants
Vickie Bailey and Tricia Gunnells, Carrie McLemore made a motion to nominate Tricia Gunnells
for appointment to the commission, which was seconded by David Johnson; the motion carried.
The city council will make the appointment after the commission has met in February and
approved the minutes reflecting this election.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 7th
at 4:30 p.m. at Fairhope Middle School.
