HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-15-1982 Special MeetingThe City of Fairhope Planning Commission held a special meeting March 15, 1982 at the City Administration Building, 387 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, Alabama Those present: Dick Sanderson, Pierce Frederick, Roy White, Cindy McBrearty, Harrell Holder, Cecil Pitman Pierce Frederick said the meeting was called at the request of the architect, Louis Girdler, and the owner/developer Ken Altmeyer of Wind- ward Village Condominiums being developed at the corner of Volanta and Section Streets,to talk about the drainage requirements set out by the Commission at their August 1981 meeting. At the time the plans were approved, the developer was required to drain the northern 3/4 of the land area to Volanta with a catch -basin and culvert to be established along the West property line from an indicated point North. At this time they are here to request the Commission consider changing the catch basin'and culvert requirement to sodded swale. Mr. Girdler remarked that the sod would work as an absorbent, that the catch basin would run the water contrary to land slope, and because of cleared area, at a faster pace.- This would be all funneled to Volanta and the water now flows at a pace that almost cannot be handled, at a flooding stage after heavy rains. He can do it as required but is suggesting that we allow the water to run as it was shown on the topo naturally, half to west and half to north. Bob was asked if he thought Mr. Girdler's plans were all right. He remarked that he agreed with his thinking. Harrell Holder remarked that he would rather see the sodded swale than the pipe increase the flow now on Volanta. Whether or not it would wash out Miller was discussed. Dick Sanderson remarked that it was unfortunate that the Board did not have an engineer to appraise these projects before, representing the City. That this sounded like the right solution. Roy agreed we were operating on hindsight, that we do not have the funds available to hire an engineer, but Bob is doing an excellent job with what he does. Cecil Pitman moved to allow the developer to exchange the sodded swale pattern to divert the water in equal amounts to Volanta and Miller than the requirements made at the August 1981 meeting. Harrell Holder seconded and motion carried unanimously. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
