The Airport Board of the City of Fairhope met September 23, 1986
at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street
Present: Chairman Mason McGowin, members Jeanette Puckett
and Robert Colling. M.L. Aust Consulting Engineer
Meg Cosby, FBO and several other pilots who were
invited to come to discuss with the Board T-hangars.
Mason told all present that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss
the T-hangar issue at the airport. He had invited Mayor Nix to
join in on the meeting. He stated that we have been working on
this for as long as 18 months. He told of the expansion project
and City's involvement with same. That we had a 90-10 project
which meant that the City had to come up with 170, 000.00 to off-
set grant amount of 1,700,000.00. That the project is nearing
completion within 6-8 weeks. He went on to say that Rohr is
planning expansion project and that they would be requiring
use of the big hangar that Meg is presently storing airplanes
in. He told of the cost of possible $16000 per unit for the 8
planned and that site preparation would be a big cost in these.
That if we only charge $100 per month that we would not be
making big reduction in money that it would take to build.
The problems with getting the site work done was discussed
w/Mayor emphasizing that the city would be glad to do the
site work. M.L. said he had dirt at the airport. The question
was raised as to why not use site reserved for additional FBO.
it would lend itself to this. Further discussion between Mayor,
M.L., Mason as to best site led to Gilbert Wesley suggesting
open planeport . That he feels that being out in the weather
is worst problem, especially in summer. All agreed that
open planeport could be solution. That we really could not
reach a solution today, but hoped that the pilots realized
the problems that the board was facing. Gilbert Wesley
offered to look into the cost of erecting open planeport.
The mayor told the board that is they could find a space
to use, without spending a great amount of money that the
city would be ready to help, that they were not looking to
make any money, just break even.
There being no further discussion, meeting was adjourned.
