January 31, 2019
3 p.m., Conference Room in City Hall
Members present Patrick Waldrop, Greg Wittendorfer, Richard Johnson, Paul Merchant, Craig Tappan,
Skip Jones and Paul Fontenot. Absent: Jo Hogan and Jay Robinson. Gayle Fogarty took minutes.
Paul Fontenot called the meeting to order at 3:08 p.m. Paul Fontenot introduced new member -Greg
Wittendorfer to the committee. Richard Johnson mentioned the eligible candidates for the beautification
awards: 759 Nichols, 60 N. Section Street (Dumbwaiter), 420 Fairhope Ave. (Wok by d' Bay), 136 Greeno Road N. (ABC Store# 67), 455 Magnolia, 10 I Mobile Street S. (Colonial Inn), 108 N. Section
(Section Street Pizza), 809 Fairhope Ave. (Pit Stop Carwash), Grand Hotel, 200 S. Section Street
(Redeemer Lutheran Church), and 85 N. Bancroft (The Mill)
After committee discussion, the members agreed on the following beautification award winners:
Award# 1
Beautification Award Presented To: Section Place, Ware M. Porter, 108 North Section Street, for
Exceptional Consideration in Siting the Building and for Outstanding Use of Environmental Practices
Award #2
Beautification Award Presented To: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 200 South Section Street, for Outstanding Architectural Structure and Tree Preservation
Award #3
Beautification Award Presented To: Wok by d'Bay, 420 Fairhope Avenue, for Exceptional
Attention to Appearance of Existing Historic Structure and Siting Major Expansion of the Structure
Award# 4
Beautification Award Presented To: Britt Properties, LLC, 455 Magnolia Avenue, for Exceptional Consideration in Siting the Building and for Outstanding Architectural Design
Award# 5
Beautification Award Presented To: ABC Store# 67, 160 Baldwin Square, For Exceptional
Remodel and Landscaping in a Commercial Structure
Arbor Day: Paul Merchant stated that the seedling packaging will take place on February 15 at 10 a.m. Paul M. asked the members if they would like to have Meyers Lemon and Satsuma trees available for a
drawing again this year, the committee agreed. Paul M. stated that he will pick up the trees prior to Arbor Day.
Discussion of Tree Committee Openings: There was general discussion among the tree committee members, several members suggested contacting the garden clubs for a potential new member.
New Business: There was a great deal of discussion among the members regarding the Live Oak on Section Street and the City of Fairhope's tree/landscape ordinance. Richard Johnson suggested that all
committee members review the ordinance and discuss at a future meeting. Richard also informed the committee that the Rock Creek Stabilization Project is underway.
Skip Jones commented that public works did a great job on the Bayview Project.
There being no other business, the committee adjourned at 4: 15 p.m.
