Members present:

there as ex-officio and took minutes.
Discussion:
How to protect trees in setback areas of residentially zoned areas and should there be a certain size and
species that we consider to protect.
There is a need to update member appointments and there are a few members who do not wish to be
back on the committee. Maria Gwyn has resigned.
Arbor Day is 2/15/14 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Poster contest judging will be done at the 5th grade level
again, and Sherry Sullivan and Paige Tuberville will help coordinate it. Everyone is interested in helping
judge and need to know the date. The Boy Scouts, Master Gardeners, the Jazz band, and Faulkner have
all been contacted by Mrs. Harriet. The tree services will be contacted to serve refreshments again. It
was noted that the ISA Southern Chapter meeting is at the same time and some tree services may be
attending the conference. Tree brochures and pamphlets on how to plant trees will be distributed at
Arbor Day. Recognition of State Champion trees and Treasure trees will be conducted. Beautification
awards will also be distributed at the ceremony for businesses who have exemplified an exceptional
contribution to the Fairhope landscape. The jud,ing for the beautification awards will need to be
organized so the awards can be given. The list of CO's will be sent out and the date for the bus trip will
need to be in late January/ early February so that the plaques can be ordered. Jennifer Fidler will get
the list of CO's and send a date out for everyone to attend.
There are updated forms for the treasure tree program complementary of Mrs. Harriet. These will be
posted on the website after being reviewed by Ms. Fidler.
It appears that we may have a new state champion tree. It is a cross between a Dahoon Holly &
American Holly and is located on the corner of Morphy and Section along Morphy. Patrick will nominate
the tree for state champion status. He will also check on the swamp tupelo located at the bay.
Motion: There is a need for the tree committee to be involved in the development or non-development
of the new triangle property the city owns. There was a motion made by Walt Bolton, "that we, as a
committee, be actively involved in the triangle planning process". The motion was seconded by Harriet
and the motion passed unanimously.
The committee adjourned at 4:30 pm.
