HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-24-2013 Tree Committee Meeting MinutesThe Tree Committee of the City of Fairhope met Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Delchamps Room, 161 South Section Street in Fairhope. Present: Jennifer Fidler, Paul Fontenot, JoAnne Hogan, Maria Gwynn, Patrick Waldrop, Walt Bolton and Harriett Gutknecht. Absent: Kent Schwartz and Skip Jones Paul Fontenot called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Thursday, July 19, 2012 were reviewed and approved 1st motion by Harriett Gutknecht and 2nd by Patrick Waldrop and unanimously carried. Election of Officers-Paul Fontenot will serve as Chair of the Tree Committee. The group discussed and approved 1st motion by Walt Bolton and 2nd by Patrick Waldrop. Patrick Waldrop will serve as Vice-Chair of the Tree Committee. The group discussed and approved 1st motion by Harriett Gutknecht and 2nd by Walt Bolton. ArborDay-Harriett Gutknecht gave an update on Arbor Day set for February 23, 2013. She listed the trees that would be distributed to attendees-American Hornbeam, Flowering Dogwood, Eastern Mayhaw, Parsley Haw, American Beech, Dahoon Holly, Southern Red Oak, American Snowbell and Winged Elm. Harriett also informed the group that the Arbor Day poster contest judging will take place on February 7 at Fairhope Intermediate School and J. Larry Newton. Walt Bolton, Jennifer Fidler and Harriett Gutknecht volunteered to judge the contest. Paul Fontenot added he could attend, if more people were needed. Jennifer Fidler added that she needed help from the group to choose 3 beautification awards. The committee agreed to meet at City Hall on February 1 at 10 a.m. to drive around together and pick out the winners of the beautification awards. Gayle Fogarty will e-mail the group on January 30 to get suggestions from those that are not able to attend the February l meeting/drive. Patrick Waldrop added that he will contact Tree City USA and take care of that for Arbor Day. Harriett is in the process of updating the Tre¥ured Tree form; once it is updated she will send to Gayle Fogarty to have added to the City of Fairhope website and drop off at City Hall. She also noted that once the form is complete she will start taking submissions for the treasured trees program, in which the Wisteria Garden Club pays for the plaque for this project. Patrick Waldrop offered to assist Harriett in getting submissions. Walt Bolton added that he would contact Coffee Loft and see if they would be willing to donate coffee for the event. Harriett noted that the program will begin at 10 a.m. and the tree giveaway will take place at 10:30 a.m. on February 23.Jennifer mentioned that she expects 150-200 attendees; Jennifer asked Gayle Fogarty tomake copies of planting handouts and provide tree descriptions on trees that will be distributed.Old Business-There was general discussion of the tree trails and creating a subcommittee. Patrick Waldrop, JoAnne Hogan and Jennifer Filder will be on the subcommittee, as the trail needs certain trees removed and improvements need to be made. Jennifer Fidler mentioned that the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce would be planting a tree at Fairhope Intermediate School on February 20 at 1 p.m. She invited members to attend the planting. 103
104 The committee discussed and agreed to support the natural look of Knoll Park. The group also discussed and set future meeting dates for 2013. The dates are April 11, July 11 and October 11, 2013 at 3 p.m. the meetings will be held in the Delcbamps Room. There being no further business, the meeting was duly adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
