HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021 JulyCity Sketches JUNE / JULY 2021 Glow in the Park Summer Movie Series AMEA Scholarships Awarded First Friday Art Walk Continues 4th of July Fireworks Display The City of Fairhope is glad to welcome back its annual Fourth of July Concert & Fireworks display again this year on Sunday, July 4th in Henry George Park and the Fairhope Municipal Pier. The Baldwin Pops Band Independence Day Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Henry George Park. A variety of patriotic music will be played before and during the fireworks display. The Fairhope fireworks display will begin at approximately 9 p.m. The north end of Fairhope Municipal Park will be open through-out the day and will remain open until no parking is available. The south end of the beach front park and Knoll Park will be available to spectators. Handicap parking will be available near the fountain but will be limited. Those who wish to park in the handicap area should plan to arrive early and stay until the fire-works are over. As a reminder, this is an alcohol-free event and no personal fireworks are permitted. NEWS HIGHLIGHTSJUNE / JULY 2021Fourth of July Concert & Fireworks Display Henry George Park Sunday, July 4th 7pm Concert begins 9pm Fireworks display Alcohol-free event City Sketches JUNE / JULY 2021 Arts Alley Project Update Look for exciting news on the arts components of this project, funded by a grant from the Alabama Depart- ment of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Or- ganization, should begin in late May! The plan, which focuses on the alley that runs be- side the Fairhope Parking Garage between Section and Church Street, includes a transportation hub and public restroom while also updating drainage, lighting and surfaces and adding landscaping. Construction on the project is expected to take ap- proximately 180 total days, with a goal of having the alleyway ready to go on or before Tree Lighting on November 18th. There may be impacts to traffic and parking as work commences and continues through- out the summer, but the end result is expected to be a huge upgrade for the downtown area. The City of Fairhope returns with the 6th Annual “Glow in the Park Summer Movie Series,” guaranteed to light up your sum-mer nights with three free family movies on the second Thurs- days in June, July, and August. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic (no alcohol or glass containers) and relax with the whole family. The Down-town Fairhope Business Association will have FREE popcorn and will be giving away glow-in-the-dark necklaces before the movie. The movies will be shown at 8 p.m. at Fairhopers Com- munity Park located at 105 S Church Street. SECOND THURSDAY June, July, & August 8pm Admission is free AMEA Scholarships Awarded Forty high school seniors, including four from Fairhope High School, will enroll in a four-year college/university, communi- ty college, and/or vocational school in Alabama this year with help from the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) and its 11 Members through the 2021 AMEA Scholarship Pro- gram. Each recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship for a total of $100,000 awarded in this year’s program. AMEA re- ceived 178 scholarship applications in the 2021 program. Fair- hope recipients include Annalyn Rebecca Duke, Laney Eliza- beth Haas, Isabella Grace Myrick and John Murray Wallace. Duke plans to attend Auburn University and study Biomedical Sciences. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Na- tional Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Annalyn is a member of the Teen Literacy Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Annalyn participated in the Baldwin Coun- ty Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program. Her volunteer experience includes Fairhope Youth Rotary Club, Vacation Bible School, and mission trips. Haas plans to attend Auburn University with a major in Pre-Dental. She is a member of the Spanish Club, Project Outreach, Teen Literacy Council, Interact Club, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and the National Honor Society. Laney has vol- unteered with the Rotary Youth Club, Youth Leadership Com- mittee of the Fairhope First United Methodist Church, and she has served as a mentor in the Stepping Up program at her church. Myrick plans to attend Troy University and major in Interna- tional Business. Isabella is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Club, Teen Literacy Coun- cil, Girls Service Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Prom Committee and Book Club. She also serves on the Bay Breeze Yearbook staff, and she is a member of the Fairhope High Track and Field team. Her community service includes Future Business Leaders of America Campus Clean- up, United Way Youth Leadership Program, Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership, Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Junior Volunteer Program and Project Outreach Trunk-or-Treat program. Wallace plans to study Business Administration at Auburn Uni- versity. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Young Life Fairhope/Daphne, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Stu- dent Council and Spanish Club. John is also a member of the varsity tennis team. His volunteer experience includes Gran- bury Coats For Kids Drive, Mission Granbury, and he mowed lawns for free for the disabled, elderly and others in need. Since 1992, AMEA and its Members have provided over $2.5 million in scholarships to the graduating high school seniors who receive their electric service from AMEA Members. AMEA, a joint action agency formed in 1981, is the wholesale power provider for 11 public power utilities in Alabama, which serve approximately 350,000 customers in the cities of Alex- ander City, Dothan, Fairhope, Foley, LaFayette, Lanett, Lu- verne, Opelika, Piedmont, Sylacauga and Tuskegee. The Church Street drainage project is continuing on that ma-jor thoroughfare in the Central Business District. Construction on the first section, from Oak to Magnolia, is wrapping up as work on the second section, from Magnolia to Fairhope Ave- nue, will soon begin. This project will include infrastructure upgrades in addition to the new stormwater solutions being implemented. Impacts to the section from Magnolia to Fairhope Avenue are expected through the summer. Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve our City! Church Street Drainage Project Update The Junior City Council recently completed their 2020-2021 service proj-ect, creating and painting a Sunset Staircase mural at the staircase leading from the bluff at Henry George Park to Fairhope Avenue. The 9 Junior City Council members planned, bud- geted and presented their idea to the City Council in March and completed the project in April. Go by today and check out their beautiful work of art! JCC Sunset Staircase Project The Eastern Shore Art Center and surrounding downtown businesses will be hosting First Friday Art Walk, June 4th and July 2nd between 6-8 p.m. This monthly event is free admit-tance to visitors, featuring the opening of new artworks, de-licious refreshments, and live music. June Exhibits at ESAC include Billie Bourgeois, the Watercolor and Graphic Arts So-ciety of Mobile and the Nall Collection of Alabama Art.
