Guests in Attendance: Richard Johnson ; James Baldwin; Johnny Prewitt; Will Cunningham;
Chris Cullen; Dona Cooksy.
City Councilman representative: None were in attendance .
Meeting called to order at 4 :01pm.
Motion carried to approve 12 /6/2022 minutes .
Crosswalk Painting : Decorative striping for crosswalk on De La Mare was discussed.
**Action Item: Chris Riley will send a written request to either the Junior City Council or
George Ladd of City of Fairhope to explore the possibility of having decorative Mardi-Gras style
crosswalks painted at each end of De La Mare.
Street Shoulder between Fels and Pier: Rumble dots were removed from the shoulder due to
resident complaints along this area .
**Action Item: Bill Hall to send written request to Richard Johnson regarding a possible
solution of painting green boxes with a bicycle overlay and Share The Road markings on the
strip of roadway adjacent to the sidewalk (not designated as a legal bike lane) between Fels and
Pier A venue. Richard Johnson, once he receives this written request, will present this idea to
Fairhope's Traffic and Safety Control Committee for their input/approval before authorizing the
asphalt painting.
**Action Item: Katie Bolton will bring alternative solutions to next meeting regarding how
the City of Fairhope can safely and legally address this area of pedestrian/bicycle/vehicle
congestion.
Sidewalk Inventory Mapping: Committee members voted unanimously to target completion of
Fairhope's Sidewalk Inventory by April 1, 2023 as Hunter Simmons needs to have this
information not only for the Safe Routes to School Program but also for the Bicycle Friendly &
Safe Community Application. Hard copy city map is maintained at Katie Bolton 's business so
completed updates may be written on this map either in her shop during normal business hours of
Pro Cycle and Tri or at Committee monthly meetings.
**Action Item: Committee members with mobile devices will complete sidewalk inventory
sections as assigned in the December meeting on the ARCGIS app:
a) Mike Walker to complete Idlewild area and the section north of Twin Beech Road, west
of Thompson Hill Road and east of Greeno Road south of Morphy;
b) Morgan Russell to complete area west of Greeno Rd, north of Old Battles Road , south of
Twin Beech Road and east of Section Street ;
c) Bill Hall to complete Rock Creek subdivision ;
d) Rosalie Stromme to complete area north of Fairhope Ave , west of 181 , south of 104 and
east of CR13 .
Bike Repair Station and Additional Bike Racks: Michelle Me lton confirmed to Rosalie Stromme
that the money for these two items has been included in Fairhope's 2022-2023 budget.
Committee members voted unanimously to ask Richard Johnson attending this meeting to begin
the process of purchasing these items.
**Action Item: Richard Johnson will authorize the purchase of the $2 ,300 Repair Station to
be installed on the multi-use path at the base of Fels Avenue near the existing restrooms. He will
also procure at least 5 additional bike racks. When they are physically received in Fairhope , this
committee will discuss the 5 locations where they could be placed to benefit the most number of
riders.
Triangle Property: Richard Johnson reported that the two Triangle properties are being
surveyed this month and a roundabout is proposed at the intersection where Fairhope's Flower
Clock is located.
Twin Beech & Summer Lakes intersection : This intersection has proven to be dangerous in
recent months due to incident reports /accidents. Solutions were discussed such as flashing lights
at eye level for drivers. Committee members agreed that a written complaint from a Fairhopian
citizen should be sent to this committee via fairhopepedbikeada @ gmail.com ; committee will
then take appropriate action with responsible city entities.
**Action Ite m: Katie Bolton to contact the citizen who made this observation and ask that
they sign/email their written complaint to this committee.
New Business:
a) Richard Johnson reported that the roundabout at Twin Beech and CR13 will begin
construction in approx . 6-9 months as the contractor has already been hired.
b) Richard Johnson reported that there is a $1 ,000 ,000 sidewalk project authorized to begin
construction in the Blue Island area.
c) Residents Will Cunningham and Chris Cullen requested guidance on how to address a
dangerous intersection of Summit Street and Nichols A venue which has a blind short
curve that creates concern for the combination of speeding cars and children playing.
** Action Item: Will Cunningham and Chris Cullen will send a formal request to
Fairhope's police department to initialize a traffic study specific to this intersection
covering speed and volume to derive data for a recommended solution.
Next scheduled meeting: February 7, 2023 at 4pm in the Library's Second Floor Boardroom.
