HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-21-2009 Regular Meetingf ·• The Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, October 21 , 2009 , at 5:15 p.m . at the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road . Present were : Chairman Charlie Langham, Sherry Sullivan , Jennifer Douglass, Jim Godfrey, Hank Mullins, Mike Ford, Eddie Boyette , and Liz Chandler . Abse ntee were : Vann Saltz , John Baker, and Derek Thomas . Chairman Charlie Langham called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday, September 6, 2009 were reviewed and approved by Jim Godfrey and 2nd motioned by Hank Mullins and unanimously carried . Charlie began the meeting by asking where the Parks and Recreation Center stood on the purchasing of the Barnwell property. Sherry Sullivan stated that the City Council had agreed to purchase the property . Charl ie then asked what the ne xt step was and Mike and Sherry said was to develop the property. Charl ie recommended handing the development ideas over to the different leagues, i.e. soccer, football etc . M ike Ford wanted to recommend Tom Kuhl for the position of the Parks and Recreat ion Direction upon Eddie Boyette 's retirement. Hank and Jim suggested that the Recreation Board hold off on any recommendations until closer to Eddie 's retirement date which would be November 10th , 2009 . Hank sa id that the Recreation Board needed more time to think about it and to see what other options were . He al so suggested that the other Recreation Board members should be present for de ci sions on any recommendations made. Liz Chandler gave a report on the Recreation Center. Liz reported that youth basketball registration would begin October 24 th, 2009 . Liz stated the Health Fair held on October i h, 2009 was a success for both current members and non - members. Liz also stated membership was ahead of projection with members totaling 609 and programs such as Women on Weights, a group personal training program , filled as soon as registrat ion began. Jenny asked if the recreation Center was going to add more evening classes for those who work and Liz stated that with basketball season here and practices beginning some classes were going to have to be cancelled and or moved around . Liz stated she didn't mind do i ng that because basketball comes first . This is when the subject of Jassercize came up as to how many classes they had in the evening and if they were going to accommodate basketball. Liz said Danny Ford was told she wasn 't leaving until November 30 t\ 2009. Jim Godfrey asked if there was a contract and Liz said she d idn 't know the set up betw een Jassercize and the Recreation Center because the program was in place before she was hired . Sherry suggested that it might be best if the Recreation Board members that had concerns schedule a meeting with Caroline Bagger to discuss how the program was set up . The meeting was duly adjourned at 6:15p .m. J ,. The Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday September 16th, 2009 at 5 :15 PM at the Recreation Center at 803 North Greeno Road . Present: Charlie Langham, Chairman; John Baker, Jonny Douglass, Derk Thomas, Eddie Boyett, Tom Kuhl, and Recreation Center Director Liz Chandler. Absent: Van Saltz, Jim Godfrey, Hank Mullins, Sherry Sullivan, and Mike Ford Eddie Boyett reported that soccer was getting ready to start up and that the fields were very wet and he was having to hold off practices as to not destroy the grass. Eddie also reported that the Recreation Center Grand Opening was a success and he was getting lots of good compliments. Liz Chandler gave a report on the new Recreation Center. She said that they were getting off to a great start with memberships totaling 262. She also stated that group fitness classes will be beginning Monday September21st, 2009. Group Fitness classes will be included with the membership held at the Recreation Center with the exception of Jazzercise because it is its own program leasing the facility. Liz also stated that a lot of members were signing up for equipment orientations with the fitness center attendants. She said that before doing the group fitness schedule she did a survey to see where the interest of the membership was. It was also stated that the Recreation Center would be hosting a Flu and pneumonia shot clinic done by Walgreens. The fitness staff will be doing free body mass index and blood pressure screenings with light refreshments. Charlie asked Eddie about the 40 acres of land off of Highway 13 and Manley Rd and Eddie remarked that it was still on the table. Meeting was duly adjourned at 6:15pm.
