HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024 MayJuneNational Public Works Week, celebrated from May 19 to 24 this year, offers a special opportunity to acknowledge the dedicated individuals who form the foundation of our city. George Ladd, the Director of Public Works, underlined the importance of this week by stating, “It allows us to shine a spotlight on the essential role Public Works plays in our community and to demonstrate how our projects directly impact the daily lives of residents.” The primary focus is on educating the public about the significance of Public Works and how their endeavors enhance the overall quality of life within our city. The Fairhope Public Works team consists of 92 employees who work across various departments including streets and construction, landscape and horticulture, and waste and sanitation. Currently, they are engaged in repaving Section Street from Bayou to Fels, undertaking a drainage project north of Gayfer, and planning several upcoming initiatives. One of these projects involves enhancing the urban tree canopy by pruning low-hanging branches in Fairhope subdivisions, offering health and social benefits while ensuring clear sidewalks and roadways, as well as maintaining tree health. Additionally, the transformation of Pine Street into a one-way street with increased parking and sidewalks is in progress. From mosquito control to landfill maintenance, waste and sanitation services, and the care of the iconic Fairhope flowers, Public Works diligently fulfills a multitude of responsibilities to uphold the functionality and aesthetics of Fairhope. Despite their tireless efforts to keep Fairhope both functional and aesthetically pleasing, the hard work of Public Works employees often goes unrecognized. Therefore, National Public Works Week serves as a reminder to express gratitude and acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by these dedicated individuals.
