A delegation from the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce;
Barry Gaston, Kolleen Krandal, and Rae Jackson; came before
the Council to report on a problem having to do with the
upcoming annual Arts & Crafts Festival (March 17-19). A group
of crafters have formed an association called the Southern
Crafters Association and have announced that they will be
exhibiting their crafts at a downtown vacant lot in Fairhope
during the Festival. The mailout or application form, copies
of which were given to the Council, for crafters to use to
rent exhibition booths from Southern Crafers Association stated
that the City of Fairhope would be responsible for loss or
damage of any kind. Mr. Gaston asked the Council to research
the possibility of an ordinance that would stop this type of
situation from occuring in the future and would place control of the
Arts & Crafts Festival under the Chamber as it has been for many
years. Council concurred with the request and research will be
done for future action. The present situation was of the most
concern to the Council as, as Mayor Nix said: "The City will
certainly not be liable for loss or damage of any kind." After
some discussion as to what type of license the Southern Crafters
had or would request, Councilman Shull moved to authorize the
Mayor to take whatever legal steps are available, if any, to
control the activities of the Southern Crafters Association on
March 17 to 19, 1989. Seconded by Councilwoman Puckett, motion
passed unanimously.
Councilman White moved to pay bills as presented. Seconded
by Councilman Shull, motion passed unanimously.
