Meeting was recessed for 20 minutes until 6:30 p.m. at which time the Council will hear a committee of businessmen on the subject of Business Licenses. Several local businessmen formed a committee to speak to the Council on the subject of annual Business Licenses. The Committee offered several objections to the present License Ordinance; stat- ing the method of licensing was unfair, an invasion of privacy, and asking that some other method be found instead of annual gross receipts. Some suggested that licenses be based on profits, number of employees, fixed fees, or square footage. The Council stated they felt the gross receipts method had been proven to be the most fair method and consequently is most widely used method. One member of the committee kept insisting that more information should be given to them, such as names of all Licensees. Council stated such information is privileged and would not be given out in any form. Council offered a compromise - gross receipts method but reduced rate schedules to favor those businesses grossing less that $500,000. The Committee kept insisting on more information. The discussion became heated. Councilman White moved to adjourn. Meeting was duly adjourned. / MAor James P. Nix 1
